Yes, I know this has been covered before and yes I did do the search.  I've read through much of it and it seems they mostly turn into a debate on whether or not they are worth it without much info on the different catch can options.  I'm convinced they are worth it and can do not harm even if it end up not helping anything.  So, please let's stick differences in the options and leave the debate about how useful they are to other threads.

 

I'm looking for recommendations for a good catch can for a bone stock 2015 5.3 Sierra 1500.  What would you recommend and why?  I see Elite has a couple different options.  Are they any good?  What else is out there?

I researched this in depth before I purchased. I decided on the Elite E2 without Clean Side Separator (CSS). The CSS is primarily for low vacuum events such as towing or a frequent heavy foot. I believe in these things and I get a fair amount of oil in the can which I’m glad isn't on my intake valves. Elite has been around a long time but they all are good and work on the same principle.

Elite or UPR should be your only options. My elite collects lost of crap so you know its working. 

I got the E2, smaller one but spend the money and get the larger can and one that has a drain on the bottom for ease of draining.

They get full quick. Unless you can drill and tap a drain valve like i plan on doing, then the smaller one will work.

You dont really need the cleanside seperator.

Looked for the "common" oil in the intake and the intake tube when I installed my CAI. No oil or residue present, even after romping around with the CAI, no oil or film noticeable. Until I start taking my truck on track days I probably wont buy one. I will save it for the boosted SBC's that have higher crankcase pressures and require the use of one.

This is my second GDI GM vehicle.  The first was an 08 Caddy CTS withe the 3.6 V6.   At about 40k miles, I noticed a puddle of oil in the intake tube.  I pulled it off and cleaned it.  While it was off, I notice the TB was oily.   Cleaned that as well.  Looked into the manifold.  It was full of oil.  Pulled the upper intake and cleaned that.  While it was off, I could see the intake valves, they were totally gummed up.  Spent another 2 hours cleaning that up.  I ordered a catch can the next day.  Everything stayed clean after that, at least until I traded it at 111k for this truck.  I used to get about 3-4 ounces of fluid out of the catch can every 4-5k miles.  The fluid was a combination of oil and water vapors so it looked like chocolate milk.

 

Therefore, I am sold on the need for a catch can on all GDI engines.  The new Fords went to a combination of port and direct inject, my guess is to combat this issue.

 

My old was was an RX, but I can't seem to find them anymore.

I have had the Elite E2 and the UPR on my 2015 Silverado. The UPR catches more oil and the hoses and connections are 10x better than the Elite. I had to replace the Elite hoses due to them collapsing.  If you decide to go with the UPR, there is a UPR vendor on this forum that offers a discount for GM-Trucks.com forum members. The UPR is pricey, but well worth it over the Elite IMO.

I was looking at the UPR online.  Looks like the kit without the CSS is $269 on UPR's site, not terrible.  But if I can get it at a discount, that would be great.  Do you know who to contact?

ahh..Yes, those first 3.6 GDI  is what brought me to BG-Products and the Catch Can.......ugly,ugly.....

PM JoeCCS on this site. He is usually quick to respond. Also, I would suggest adding the pro series check valve and clean side separator.

This.  I love my elite e2.  I run e85 so I think it tends to produce more moisture.  The e2 does a great job at collecting it.  So much so that I have to empty it every 1500 miles.  Also I noticed I have to add about the 1/2 quart of oil between changes due to the amount of oil it catches. And no my truck isn't burning oil.

I think you'd be adding the oil either way.  The catch can just means you engine did not ingest it.

That would mean that the catch can somehow is removing oil from the engine that was not already on it's way to the intake, or you engine has worn in a bit has a bit more blow by than it used to.  I don't see how the catch can could possibly suck oil out of the engine, so I'm guessing he latter.

No way a catch can will cause oil usage.

Agree with Mike GMC, more engine wear.

    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...

    • I started my install this weekend. Everything was pretty straight forward but I ran into one issue with running power through the firewall. The nipple grommet on my High Country already has a small harness running through it - has anyone else ran into this issue? And on the engine bay side, does the wire basically just penetrate the factory wiring boot? I did this on my '22 Trail Boss and it seems much easier but thats been a few years. My other thought would be possibly drilling a new hole adding a rubber grommet just to the lower left of the factory hole. Thoughts?   Has anyone used a T-harness off the Bose amp and obtained power from there? It seems a little odd that such a small amp needs 3 power leads

I buy all teh filters for  our three vehicles once or twice a year. Have always run NAPA Gold on everything I own....I buy it thru my Son's account for his business-which he has a Heavy Equipment repair shop-one reason he uses NAPA so much-they have such a full line of coverage for just about anything/anywhere- He gets s  good discount because of volume bought.
