New Truck Break-in

I am picking up my new Sierra from out of state tomorrow and driving it 1000 miles back home.  Anything I should be concerned about regarding break-in?

When I was younger I drove them like I stole them right off the lot. Come to think of it during the test drive. I drove my barracuda so hard I burnt the paint off the motor, boy that smelled good. Today I drive them like I’m going to drive them, hell getting old.

Honestly, just avoid travelling at one constant speed.  Don't use cruise.  Don't use wide open throttle.

When I test drove mine I wasn't aware of this page in the manual (who is) but gradually took it up over 70mph to feel for any shaking/ vibration. I highly recommend.

I will definitively be doing this.

I had more than a few I took the first weekend to the drags to see what they do. But hey that’s not maintaining constant speed.

1000 mile drive home, any time after that would be a good time to change out the factory fill oil and filter to get rid of any assembly lube, any fine casting material, etc. especially if this Sierra has sat on the lot for awhile.

I will be dumping the oil when I get home.  My usual routine for new cars.  1000-2000 mile oil change.

Every new vehicle I have purchased I just drove it the way I always drove and never had any issues. Like my current 2002 Silverado, 182k miles and runs great no problems.  But then all my vehicles have been local and not long distance drives like yours.  With that said, I think you will be fine, just be safe on that long drive home.

I will try to keep this short. Do your research. This motor is Direct Injection motor. Look up articles in this forum around 'break in', 'oil burner', 'catch cans'. Proper break in.

Eventually I will write my story of my trucks life in this forum. My research around issue I've had.

All around I do not want to sound discouraging, love my truck but if I bought one tomorrow I would drive it like a race car at the track, opposite of what GM told us.  So everything cooks together right in the first 1000 or so miles. Then maybe I wouldn't have to add 1.5 quarts of oil after driving a 200 mile stretch.

I picked up my 2018 this March. I varied the speed for the first hundred miles. Then I set the cruise at 70 and every 15 minutes or so I would shift in the manual mode and run third gear for a while fourth gear for a while fifth gear etc. to very the RPM. Once I got 500 miles I did A few wide-open throttle spurts. Now with 3500 miles I scheduled my first oil change for next week I just checked the level and it’s still at full.

Will probably do second oil change at seven or 8000 miles which will use up my two free changes. Then I’ll do the changes myself and switch to Full synthetic.

A few people have mentioned just stop for an hour or so after the first 100 through 200 miles to let the rear Diff cool down. Also known as breaking in the ring and pinion, gear mesh, etc.
