Lets talk Dash Cams. Who has one?

After being backed into at work by a new employee, I decided to finally buy a dash cam for my truck. Had the guy not left a note on my windshield I would have never known until it was too late.

There are so many out there and high end dash cams seem to be $250 and up.

I am trying out the Rexing V1P (bestbuy edition) dual cam. At first I was skeptical but I'm really starting to like it. It is $130 and if I want to add the GPS module that is another $30. The video is 1080 and the camera has a 170 degree viewing angle but I will most likely upgrade to a 4k dash cam eventually (maybe the V1 3rd Generation, if it can do dual cam).

Having the Enhanced Driver Alert Package on my 2016 was a bit annoying in mounting the dash cam. Having my radar detector hanging off the rear view mirror, and my Good-To-Go pass (toll road) mounted under the EDA housing on the windshield presented a challenge. I could not mount it high up on either side of the EDA because the camera would be blocked by the housing unit on either side. In the end I slid the GTGP over and mounted the dash cam to the EDA housing, slightly just right of the radar detector. I need to buy the hardwire kit ($10) and install that too. That will allow the dash cam to constantly record in loops (I have it set to 10min). I'm still learing the ins and outs of it.

Watching YouTube dash cam videos has really started putting the fear into me about not having one. Reading about Ravenkeeper and his wreck, I hope he had one too and caught the license plate of the car that caused the accident. By no means am I saying it would have prevented it.

I will post picture of my setup later. I still need to run the rear camera, just figuring out where I want to run the wire. Also I need to make a final decision if I want it in the cab or in the bed canopy.

I'd like a dual camera set up as well. I need to find out which cameras can handle being left inside the truck when it's 115 degrees outside though. I think what I read years ago was it had to run on a capacitor, and not on batteries. Anyone out there in a hot climate have one that they like?

Have had one for several years now. Just a front one so far. Gives me a lot of piece of mind.
Even if it doesn't work, it can be very effective at convincing an offending party to NOT lie to the cops. All you have to do is just point at it and say- "Make sure you don't lie; see that dash camera by my rearview mirror?" If they ask to see the footage, just say"I'm saving it for the police"

The heat is definitely a concern for me. I bought a really cheap one off amazon ($25) that worked well for about 3 months (minus the initial glitches and flaws) but I think the summer sun fried it because the video would stop after 9 seconds of recording, black screen, then start recording again. I just bought another, significantly higher quality for $90 off amazon that films in 4k but is still only one directional. I have been thinking about trying to hook my old cheap and shitty one up facing inside the cab but haven't bothered yet because I think it will still glitch out around the 9 second mark. The new model so far has held up in the heat but its only been a week and hasn't broken 90 yet.

Will say that this is one of my favorite additions to my truck. Its just peace of mind knowing that I have evidence in the event of an incident. I think I have had one now for about six months and while I don't have any footage for liveleak yet, I have the people in my parking lot knowing they better not hit my truck (both models have a motion/ g sensor activated recording so if your bumper gets tapped you hopefully can catch the license plate).

I have tried multiple different dash cams. I have read dozens of reviews. Some are not reliable, some are hard to use, some have poor video quality. I have a box of dash cams that were not worth using. After everything I have tried, this is the best one available:

Ive got the Rexing V1 with GPS. I love it. Granted I’m on my third one due to the others breaking or quit working. All have been replaced under warranty although their customer service could be improved. Overall I’m happy with the last one I’ve received. They are very sensitive to bumps and jars. One failed to remain working after the suction cup mount they offer failed on the windshield and fell to the floor board of the car I was in. Ive got mine mounted behind the rear view mirror on the drivers side and hard wired into the truck. Haven’t had to use the video footage yet for any reason and hope I don’t but it’s a piece of mind knowing it’s there always watching.

Just put a Thinkware f800 pro 2 ch in mine after some $%#@ ran into to the back of my new 2018. Pisses me off people using my trucks as a back up indicators, just back up till you feel it bump the truck and drive away. My Tundra I just sold had been backed into 4 or 5 times. Still don't see how you couldn't see when you were close enough to this with 6" lift on 35s
