White Smoke on startup

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone just wanted to see if anyone has experienced white smoke on startup (like in the mornings). The truck has about 2500 miles on it. Need to see if this is an issue so I can give a laundry list to the dealer to look at

1. trans is jumpy

2. little bit of chevy shake

3. steering wheel is off center

Just seems like it rides like crap. For a 48k vehicle  you would think it would ride better. Hell my 6 inch lifted Duramax on 35's rode 10x better. Oh well let me know what you think

I can see some smoke only during cool mornings with my 2016.  It typically goes away rather quick but I do notice it and haven't batted an eye.  I think it is completely normal for mine anyway. As far as the transmission there is definitely a learning period.  I noticed mine clear up for the most part within a few thousand miles from buying it new.  If you are experiencing jerky downshifts when slowing that may never go away.  (this is what mine is doing).  No chevy shake on mine, I can go 80 and its very smooth, they may road balance your tires to start but some people claim the drive shaft is out of round causing their shake at higher speeds.

They do ride like crap.  If you have the “Z71” package, it’s the most jarring, unforgiving, crap ride out there in the pickup world right now.  Everyone has an opinion about suspensions, and my opinion is GM needs to up their game on ride quality.  I agree with you, the 3/4 tons ride better than the 1/2 ton z71.

The retail price of a product reflects the profit margin more so than the final quality of the product.

Example:

Fish eggs fishing bait - VS - Caviar

Nike Shoes - VS - Shoes for Crews

1st class ticks - VS - Coach seats

I agree that for $50K you would expect the rig to be perfect, but that is just not the case with most things.

Most companies work like this:

Step 1) Lower production costs

Step 2) Sell more units

Step 3) Raise the retail price

They have many many people working in each of these departments. Millions are invested to achieve each goal.

The customer being happy is not a relevant issue unless it is required to achieve the goals. For instance, its far more important to sell you the product than it is to make you happy with your purchase. This is the case with ALL products, not just food, shoes, cars, houses, etc.

Services are different. Cable TV and cell phone companies MUST maintain customer satisfaction to keep the profits up. The ONLY reason that these companies care about customer satisfaction is because its a required part of the business. If all of the cell phone customers would keep paying their bill even if the phone did not function, then the cell towers would be taken down and all of the employees would be in the billing department. There would be no tech support and none of the phones would ever work.

Companies do what ever it takes to make the most amount of money. Sounds like a reasonable business plan to me.

I've got the All Terrain package on mine. I think what I may do first is get the driveshaft checked. The trans issue I can KIND of deal with but still.. It sucks to have to dump money in to a brand new truck (possibly new tires, getting driveshaft checked out, alignment from NON- gmc place). Its funny though, I rode in a RAM before this and it rode like a dream. If I can't get these issues resolved, I might be heading that way

White smoke at startup is usually a sign of oil leaking past the valve guide seals.  It used to be a big issue on 80's and 90's chevy's that had 100K+ miles.  On them, the seals would break down from the heat cycles over the years and start leaking.

I'd be concerned if I was seeing it already on a 2500 mile engine.

damn, so if I drive it around, park it, then come out and does nothing, it should be ok?? I guess I need to watch it a little more carefully on when it comes out(like just in the mornings or all of the time). Maybe lemon law comes in to effect here lol

He might be right, but I think the white smoke is just condensation that has built up due to the temperature difference in the exhaust system.

Burning oil is usually blue.

It's usually a 'first start of the morning after sitting all night' thing.  We're talking trace amounts of oil seeping around the valve stems.  It was common on older trucks, more of a nuisance and required the removal of the valve springs to replace the seals so most people just lived with it.

The All-Terrain shares the same shocks as the Z71, I am pretty sure. I wouldn't dump any money into it, if the issues can be replicated and shown to a dealer take it to a GMC dealer, show them the issues and request a loaner vehicle until your truck is fixed. The truck should not have any shake nor should the steering wheel be off-center. Take it in and demand, as politely as possible, that they make it right. If you do end up pursuing a lemon law suit the paperwork and documentation of the issues at a GMC dealer will be very beneficial.

This is due to the " Rancho " shocks the Z71 package is equipped with.

Switch over to Bilstein or any other reliable house made brand and you might just love to drive your truck again.

The Ram has a fantastic ride to it and the interior on the new 2019 Rams is unreal.

My dealership just replaced two tires on mine to resolve an issue I was having.  It's a brand new truck.  Make them make it right.
