Oil

Hi all.  I have a 2011 Sierra 5.3.  Just got it.  Have no idea what type of oil is in there.  I want to put Havoline 5-30 DINO oil in it.  Think it would work?  Owners manual or Haynes say nothing about synthetic, just API certified.

5-30 semi synthetic is the minimum requirement.

If you truly want to be compliant, find something that is Dexos approved.

Havoline will work just fine.  GM requires a dexos 1 oil and most on the shelf now meet that specification.

IMHO I would run a synthetic or blended oil. As much as I love DINO oil, the prof is out that synthetic is better. You can get 5 QT on Amazon for 20-30 bucks and you can run it for 6 months or 6000 miles most of the time. Depends on what you use the truck for, Towing, hwy. Its hard to beat oil changes 2 times a year. I found I like to waste money and change it every 3K. Just my 2 cents. I'm a little biased on oil.

If you like the truck and want it to last, at least semi-synthetic rated Dexos 1.

5W30 I think.

Quality filter for longer oil change intervals.

I like the full synthetics.  I’ve noticed less engine tapping sounds and burn less oil then conventional.

Most of the major brands do still carry conventional oil, Castrol GTX is a good example, but the GTX line also has blended and full synthetics. No matter who made the oil you want to use, ya gotta read the label. Biggest thing to consider is the difference in change intervals. Conventional/dino oils just don't last as long.
