Amp Research Steps

Hey Guys,

Ordered a "New to me" 2015 GMC Sierra...Should be here next week...........Got.a lift ordered (6") and just got my wheels in yesterday. I went with 22" wheels and 35 Inch tires. My wife is already complaining about how high it is going to be. I keep telling her that it wont be much worse than my Yukon, but she ain't having it. I was looking at getting the Amp Research power steps already, but saw that they make an "XL"........and they are like 500 bucks more, on top of the what I considered crazy price. Is it really necessary. Would like to get some input from guys who have either gotten the regular ones, and maybe some that have gotten the XL's.

Thanks!

How did you "order" a 4 year old truck?

I have a Silverado lifted 6.5" on 35's and the regular Amps are perfect.

I have regular steps on a ‘18 with a 8inch lift, 1.5inch body lift, also on 22’s & 35’s and they are perfect. I believe the extra drop ones they offer are for after you pass a 12inch lift

They recommend for 6"+ on their site, at least they used to.

I think step height from ground is different for everyone, but if you're on the shorter side the XL is prob ideal over the standard. I'm sure you'll love both, hear nothing but good things.

This could be very true. I am 6’6 so I was just stepping up into my truck before I got them, well more like climbing into. haha But still at my truck height my amp steps are like stepping on a step stool. I’ll run a tape on them in a bit and give you a ground to step height.

So ran a tape and my steps are 20inches off the ground so if you ran a 6inch on 35’s your would be right around 16.5inches up. My ol lady is 5’7 (5’8 if you ask her haha) and she has absolutely no trouble getting in and out at this height. Hope it helps.

My amp steps on my truck at stock height (z60 suspension so it sits lower even in 4x4 trim) go down a bit too low to the ground for my taste. I have a short step up onto them and what feels like too much of a step from them into my truck. I’m not huge but not a midget at 5 10. My wife still slides off the seat to get to them. (She’s more of a midget at 5 1).

The xl steps will make it easier to get off the ground but still a decent jump into the truck unless your a giant. Lol.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think for the extra 500 bucks, the wife can deal with it.......hahahaha. I think I am going to try the regular steps. Thanks for all the input!

Anybody use these is snowy climates?  I'm curious how they handle the giant ice Berg's that form behind the front wheels and along the rockers.  Do they get frozen into position or are they strong enough to break through it?

I’ve had mine for a few months now with the packed snow and ice all over them and they don’t skip a beat.

Edit:

I do park in the garage every day/night. So it has a chance to melt off.

With that said, I would think if these (even the XL’s) got a lot of ice and snow frozen to them they would not work. Mud flaps do help keep the frozen stuff off of the front of them, but that just makes it pile up about where the first mount is.

If any of you are going to go this route, I would definitely get the override switch installed. This way you can keep them closed (up) when the conditions are nasty. Leaving them open(down) just makes the chances of them getting damaged that much more, especially if your truck is not lifted.

I live in the middle of Iowa. Asked the big Chevy dealer around here about these when I bought my 015 they said they stopped installing them cause they were problematic. I see now on Amps site they sell a heavy/severe duty set they call them Xtreme claim they are for sub zero and caked on mud conditions they cost about 500 more than the regular steps I think I read somewhere that these might have a 5 year warranty on them and the regulars have a 3 year maybe? Also they now offer a “over ride” switch so you can leave them down or up. When I looked into them before guys where making their own switches as Amp didn’t offer one. I’ll be replacing my 3/4 ton this year probably with a Fn Ford since there’s no regular cabs to be had and the 2020 HDs are beyond ugly IMO and I’m going to look into doing the Xtreme boards (if they can convince me the 500 premium is worth it) with the over ride switch so I can leave them down/up when we get the frozen caked on crap when I’m plowing.
