I’m very curious what a HC or Denali with standard bed 4x4 with all the bells and whistles payload is that.

Think the biggest difference there is going to be that you can still get a HC with NHT. Just have to forgo the packages that include 22” wheels and then order the other options separately.

 

On the Denali you can’t get NHT even if you skip the Ultimate package and stay with the 20” wheels. Been that way since at least the K2s. Assume it is suspension / ride related.

I'm interested in the Rear Axle Weight Rating for a 6.2L with the max trailering package.

Thanks!  Out of curiosity, does your truck have the 20" wheels?

 

I'm wondering if the RAWR is limited by load capacity/range of the factory tires moreso than the 3.42 rear end and axle.

Yeah, it has the 20s and Bridgestone Alenza tires. Theoretically you can get an LTZ with 18s. But I’ve yet to see one actually equipped like that, and I’m not sure if it would increase the ratings.

It may not increase the ratings.  The stock 18" tires have approximately the same load rating as your 20" tires ~ 2,700lbs. 

 

While there are far more Load Range E tires available in a similar size to the stock 18" 265/65/18 (upsize to 275/65/18), it is possible that the limitation is the actual axle and not the tires.

 

I don't think we can tell how much "true" extra capacity is left in the rear axle without actually weighing the tow vehicle + trailer.  But it is possible to quickly exceed the RAWR if you're loading the bed up as well as having a high tongue weight on the hitch.  I'm not even sure you can take the actual tongue weight of the trailer as the actual weight placed onto the rear axle since there is a lever action going on since the bumper pull doesn't sit right over the rear axle like a 5th wheel would.  I would surmise the rear axle could be seeing 1.5x the actual tongue weight of the trailer.

That is silly. The payload goes in the bed and sits over the rear axle. 90% of the weight of the bed is handled by the rear axle and its wheel bearings and springs and tires. If an engine weighs 200 lbs more than another one this only reduces payload capacity at the rear wheels 40 lbs.

 

It is usually the factory wheels and tires that determine payload along with the passenger seating provided (why regular cab trucks have the highest factory payload ratings). When I looked at identical GM trucks on dealers' lots I was struck by how the Z71 trucks with the 20" rims and tires did not even have a payload sticker in the glove box but instead had a notice that the truck was not suited for carrying a camper. Two identical trucks but different rims and tires and a difference in the payload rating between them of more than 2000 lb.

 

The AAM axle and wheel bearings on my truck are rated for 11,000 lbs and from that value I subtract the weight on the rear axle measured at a CAT scale - which was 3200 lbs for my truck. Then I go to the next weakest link which is always going to be the wheels and tires put on at the factory. This is why from the truck manufacturers' perspective it is easiest to add two more tires at the rear axle to increase payload capacity with a DRW truck. No need to stock different tires.

 

I added Supersprings to my truck as its factory springs were meant for a payload rating of 2895 lbs, and so I gained 1400 lbs of spring load capacity. I changed out the factory tires rated for 3195 lbs for ones rated at 3750 lbs, and increased this aspect of the payload capacity by 1110 lbs. The new tires support up to 7500 lbs and minus the 3200 lb weight of the truck leaves about 4,000 lbs of payload capacity for the bed.

 

If I wanted to maximize the load capacity I would switch to 19.5 wheels and tires (4800@80 PSI) but at a cost of over $3,000 to do this and being limited to highway tread tires, I stuck with the 18" wheels and tires. The 19.5 wheels are what is found on trucks like the F-450 to handle the expected loads.

I like how the capacity stickers are now.  On my '09 dually I need to do math to figure out how much fatter it's gotten since it left the factory and other weights.

    • And so you had gone through the process of registering and updating the tool and so on ?. All I can say is that on the front page as the tool fires up you go to advanced mode, then vehicle model comes up and you choose Silverado ( not the DRW or EV  since your a single rear wheel ) , then I think its choice 2 which is 07/2021 - 12/2026 ( 433mhz 13542523 ) as that is the series of tpms sensors and then go down to choice 5 which is tire type/pressure selection. Hit yes and it says to connect to OBD port and turn ignition on.    Having said this, I updated the software in my tool lately and these year range choices look different from the past due to them doing some updates it would appear and I have not connected up to the OBD port since last year so hopefully I am not in for a surprise with them screwing up the software and that it won't work on my truck anymore either.    So my question is, when you plugged into the OBD and started your truck it had that message on the Autel screen "vehicle not supported" ?. That does seem odd as tire shops would be pissed right off if hey can't use their tool on the model year after mine that in theory is supposed to be much the same truck ... unless GM did some change in the computer system to block certain things from access. 
    • Understanding and using modern scan tools is its own body of knowledge. I had little hope that would work...programming access to the BCM is probably required and that is not easy for us consumers. Expensive scan tool, GM programming subscription, online authentication, etc.   It also may be a matter of finding the right dealer to program it for you. Flashing a modern BCM might be a little too advanced for most tire shops.
    • Update for anyone following:    Installed everything as shown in diagram. Opted for 8 AWG from Battery Positive to a 50A resettable inline breaker. 8 AWG is tied into to 2x 12 AWG wires feeding a 6 way fuse bus in parallel (manufacturer’s design of what I purchased).    4 of the 6 fuses available for circuits are tied to terminal 30 of each relay. I tied a jumper from one of my spare circuits off the bus to terminal 86 of each relay. The trigger, terminal 85, was pulled from my interior by way of T-Taps from the X61A-X5 pins 10, 11, 17 and 23. This was the hardest part of the job. Even with the X61A unbolted and the X5 removed - there was VERY little wiggle room.  I added back up lights that I want to come on with my cargo lamp - but when I would check continuity between S48A-X1 pin 18 to its respective landing point on the X61A-X5 it triggers the factory relay… Instead I opted for a add-a-fuse on the passenger interior fuse panel (fuse location 10 - cargo lamp) and ran it through the boot on the driver side to my load. Did this to avoid introducing any electrical gremlins.   Note: Please check for continuity between the S48A-X1 and the X61A-X5. In my case wire colours were not the same as other’s who have posted. To do a continuity check you need a Multimeter. Completely disassemble the S48A-X1 and remove the brown face plate off the X61A-X5 by way of a flat head screwdriver - this was the only way I could get any results.   The outputs, terminal 87 of the relays, were fed into a junction box and landed at Individual studs and were labelled Aux 1-4.    At this point, all you need to do is run wire to your loads and bring them to ground. I created a negative bus in the engine bay, all my negatives land here.    For anyone having issues with all of your new aux switch lights coming on with the press of one - I noticed this only to be an issue when the battery wasn’t hooked up to my relays? No idea why, but it was quickly corrected by having my system buttoned up and functional.     
    • Well I ordered the Autel ts508, and it won't work on my truck I tried all the 2023 and everything it just says vehicle not supported lol   I'm able to send this unit back, so I'm going to do that, then I'll just stop into a some tire shops and if none of them are able to do it, I guess ill have to spend a bunch of money to get a good scanner..... Thanks GM lol
    • Don't need the air tube but that's how everyone sells them. Most places won't remove that one piece and sell it alone. No money to be made. Hoping someone swapped theirs out for a CAI and no longer wants it. Not asking anyone to give it away. Offering to buy it but I don't need the tube. It's held on by a hex head screw and nut. Been all over eBay.
