Anybody out there come up with a slick way to hard wire a permanent power supply for a radar detector on your 2019 Silverado?

I found this:

https://www.gen5diy.com/products/14-18-silverado-radar-detector-harness

Anybody try this?  Seems like it might work, but there's not nearly as much space in the RV mirror cover/molding as there is in earlier models, including the one in the video at the link.

Open to any other good ideas......

If you doing this because the power port stays on all the time you can change it to turn on and off with the ignition.

In the right instrument panel fuse block, if you move the 50A fuse from F28, and place it in F27 the power ports will only have power when the vehicle is ON, or in RAP (retained accessory power). Basically if the radio is on they will have power. That way you won't have a parasitic drain with your 12V accessories.

That’s nice if it would fit. I had great results and an easy install in my last car with the Mirror Tap cable that just inserts into the pins for the autodimming mirror power connector. On the new truck, I had an audio system installed so I just had them run a hardwire. But when I thought I was going to DIY it, I was planning on a Mirror Tap. This is the recommended one for the new trucks for a RD that uses an RJ-11 power port:

Radar detector? I thought all the ones left were in the Smithsonian. Couldn't begin to tell you where to find one around me anymore. I had one, but I got a few tickets even still.  A highway patrolman told me they're more likely to give tickets to people with them, than without. Once mine crapped out, I never replaced it.

There is a thread around here for mounting a cam, it's the same process as I used those instructions to mount my V1, Also check out MirrorTap for wiring, really easy to do.

Yeah, I use a mirror tap on my older GM vehicles, including my Z06.  Problem is, there's nothing to tap on the new truck.  Wish there was......

On my Challenger, I went into the overhead console with my volt meter and found a 12V source that works only with the ignition on, tied in a phone jack salvaged from and old phone cable, but that was much more accessible than in the new truck.  Just don't want to do the "deep dive" into that tiny space with the tiny wires if there's a slick alternative.

I tapped in to the wiring above the mirror, remove the cover on the windshield and tap right in to there, easy as the older trucks.

What specific truck and mirror do you have?  I have  a ‘19 GMC AT4 with Auto dimming mirror. What’s the trick to remove the cover? I’m a bit afraid I’ll break mine?

I've got a High Country, There is a thread about installing a cam, it has the full instructions as to how to remove the cover and what to tap in to on the OEM harness.

They are still extremely popular and as long as you buy a high end one and not a cheap placebo, they do their job well.

There are a few threads on this in the forums, and if you need help installing, send me a PM.  I used the Mirror tap kit, as I've ran one for a long time and it's from a reputable company.

Unless you really want to use the Smart cord (or similar) I see no reason to run a long cord and then mount a switch and tap the fuse box.

I was interested in the gen5diy kit, and someone on here ended up using one, but I've heard of a lot of failures from some of their harnesses, so it scared me off a little.

My Escort 360C with Escort M1 dash cam works great!  Use the blend mount to wire it in behind the rear view mirror.... and yes radar detectors work well and save me on a weekly basis.

Cool!  The wiring tap/interface that ties in to the existing harness behind the cover?  The wiring "tap" comes with the detector(s)?

I better have a closer look at the Escort site.

Escort doesn't make the mount or wire tap.  Blendmount has everything you need for a clean install:  https://www.blendmount.com/mirrortap.html

Good catch.  They offer a harness for the 19's.  I just ordered one.

The trick to getting the cover off is pulling the smaller cover off from the very top.
