296k miles, worth it?

Hey I’m new around here so be easy on me.

Scrolling through the Facebook marketplace I found a nice clean truck that has 296k miles. It has the 5.3 vortec. The oil has been changed every 5k miles, and the tranny was replaced at 290k. The truck is extremely clean all throughout. The drivers side seat doesn’t even have a single tear in it. Dude showed me all the paper work and everything is legit. I’m now just wondering if I should call back and seal the deal. It’s a 2003 Chevy 4x4 ext cab and he’s asking 7,000. Would this be a good purchase? I’m only hesitant because I’ve never bought a truck with that many miles.

Thanks.

For less it's likely worth it.

Prices can depend on demand and the area you live it. A rust free and crash free truck is still worth more to me. The miles don't really scare me that much because parts are rather cheap for these older trucks and if for some reason the engine has a problem they are cheap to get from the junkyard or to rebuild.

If the transmission has a warranty and can be transferred to you, that is a huge plus because the 4L60e is one of my only main concerns with those trucks.

Yeah, that money is more reasonable if it had only 150k miles.  With 300k, you're looking at replacing most of the drivetrain sooner than later.

Funny that people will pay $25K and much more for a 30's - 50's truck and yet find $7K a bridge too far. I suppose at one time those trucks which all cost less than $1,500 new, guys wouldn't have given you $50 for and now.....??

If this truck is as clean as it 'reads', rust free and looks nearly new.....has a new transmission.....full records with documentation??? Never wrecked? You like the truck? Willing to buy a motor if need be (although if that well maintained might go a good while yet)..then why not? Wouldn't hurt to ask if he will take less but this fella seems to take some pride in his ride. No need to be insulting. Good for him! He's offering the next round of antique collectables at a low price.

That said if your just going to throw rocks at it, haul firewood or give it to your 16 year old then it's WAY to much money OR and total waste of a really good truck.

This is the difference between a things value (what ya' all have been talking about) and a things WORTH. What's it worth to him, what's it worth to you? There isn't a book number for that.....

I don’t know where the op is from. In Texas that’s the price for half the mileage. And yes there’s plenty. It’s more than major parts. Window motors, brake hoses, switches etc. my real clean highly modified low mileage 92 is an example. I got a deal at 7500$. I’m mechanical so those things were fun for me. It also not a daily driver. My transmission and engine were fairly new too. I only put 12K miles on in 9 years. There’s always something to do on it. Hitting the gas makes it all worth it. Shiny paint on a 300K mileage stock truck? I think I’d shop around.
