Good lord! Enough with the fascination with the 6.2’s lol

Lol.  I know.  I mentioned the 6.2 because it was brought up earlier.

And a a well tuned 2.7 F 150 has run 12.87.

For me, I’m a V8 guy all the way, not to much interested into performance mods, did on my 18 6.2 cause I lifted it and needed to recal it so I thought what the heck. I LOVE the no noise and low rpms from driving a V8 on long road trips. I was interested in a Raptor if and when I start having issues with my truck (none so far, knock on wood) but I just can’t get over that queer little exhaust sound coming out the tail pipe, then I looked at the Shelby F150 and it didn’t do much for me, got back into my truck and liked my interior MUCH better. I hope everyone gets what ever their hearts desire but for me, I’m old school, low rpms and a V8 throaty sound will put a smile on me on every road trip. Btw, there are a couple Denali guys on the forums that have done an enormous amount of work on their 6.2’s, spending more time in the performance shop than actually driving it, not for me. I truly believe that running a small engine hard for long periods of time WILL only bring breakdowns sooner rather than later especially with a purchase intention for quarter mile and racing it only comes to mind.

I agree.  I like my 6.2 a lot.  It’s kinda fun to drive for a truck.

Not the most scientific test but when I pull my trailer I set the cruise on the highway to 70mph. On overpasses and bridges my 2.7 with the trailer never downshifts going up. The 5.3 would downshift. Which would mean its downshifting to generate the torque it needs to maintain 70 mph and having to rev higher. Meanwhile the 2.7 is still in 8th gear purring at 1500 rpm at 70 mph.

What are the differences in the transmission? What were the rear axle ratios?

That's what is gonna dictate whether your transmission shifts, not the engine.

I guarantee the 5.3 is geared lower than that lawn mower engine with half the rated capacity.

Lower gearing WILL make you shift more to maintain speed, but I hardly consider that a negative on towing ability. Look at their ratings. The 5.3 trucks will tow twice what the 2.7 will.

Here's a test.

Get a trailer loaded to the max that the 5.3/3.42 will tow, and put that on the 2.7.

Now tell me which one feels better.

Wait, you’re pulling 7k# trailer with your new 2.7 4 cylinder correct?

The V8 will want to roll at the highest gear possible for better MPG. Of course it downshifts for a hill.

Your 2.7 won't because it's already spinning high and more revs only help.

But that downshift on the V8 with the gearing it has will give it far more torque than your little 2.7.

Waiting for a shift isn't a measuring point.

Both had 3.42 rear axle. The loaner had the smaller 18" wheels and tires while mine has the 20's. I guess technically mine would have the higher gearing with the bigger tires.

Not questioning the 5.3 having a higher rated towing number. Just stating that for my usual towing the "lawn mower engine" struggled less than the 5.3.

Nope. Just a trailer with load of about 2000lbs.

How is it already spinning high when in the example I gave its only around 1500 rpm? Are you getting the turbocharger and engine RPM mixed up?

Check this review out:
