that was published in 2017, so its not relevant to our engines. if the 2017 engines knocked so would ours. has to be something that changed on the new L5P

I would assume Banks has done a great amount of testing on the 2020 Duramax and wonder if they have heard the same sound that we all are hearing.

Key takeaway is that it sure seems to be coming from the EGR system.

Which might mean the thump is something related to the 10 speed or the new fan and accessory drive.

 

(what's changed, lets look there first)

Broke out the stethoscope and it seems loudest at the egr on the passenger side 

Gonna put a few hundred miles on it then go to the dealer with my stethoscope and see who needs a hearing test.

It's also starting to high idle a lot.

Have been following problem also.  First dealer said it was a "normal" egr system sound.  Next dealer said it was also "normal".  This is my 4th dmax and none of the others had this knock.  I agree with Cool J that 

Banks takes these engines apart all the time.  I was wondering if there was a way to send Banks the sound clip from Bass Mechanic since they could probably figure it out.

That sounds like a great idea. 

Unfortunately, that's beyond my computer literacy. 

I think if this was posted on YouTube,  it would get a lot of hits.

Then maybe gm would have to pay more attention to our problem. And we would probably get more response from other owners with the same problem who can help join the cause.

I looked pretty hard on YouTube and the best I could find was a lot of ticking complaints for duramax. 

A good video might get Gale Banks attention.

I sent an email to Banks asking if they have observed this.  In addition, I asked if they had a programming solution of any kind.

I am wondering if the folks that have commented on this post can add another post stating their make, model, and trim.  The reason I say this is becuase I wonder if the noise is more noticeable on certain makes such as a Chevrolet 3500 LT, or LTZ or GMC SL or SLT than say a Chevrolet High Country or GMC Denali or 2500HDs.

 

I currently have a 2020 3500HD Denali that definitely makes the noise.  The noise became louder around 500 miles.  But other than when I first start it, I don't hear the noise once I start driving.

 

I do however have another noise that is prevalent at 1550 RPM.  The dealer is getting ready to swap with me for another 3500HD Denali ( last 6 of VIN 30 numbers lower than my current truck) that doesn't make the noise.  I will report back on the other Denali truck as to whether there is a loud clunking noise coming from inside the cab.

Ours is a 2020 GMC 2500HD SLE Duramax that we custom ordered.    It was the first SLE in the dealership in December and the noise has been there from day one  at 7 miles on the truck.

I just picked up a 2020 Denali HD2500 from a dealer in another state late last week. I have the "thump" just as it sounds in the vids. It was not noisy when I picked it up but it certainly was noticable when I first fueled. It now has 800 miles on the truck and it's very noticable. It does blend away at rpm. It is not a clicking ticking or even a sharp sound like an exhaust leak.

 

The compressor "thump" is the best description for sound I hear. The frequency is about 4-5 beats a second kinda like the firing tempo of only one of the cylinders. 

 

I'm all ears as to what anyone finds.

This was on another forum....   As promised here is an update on my previous post regarding the thumping/knocking noise many are experiencing with the 2020 GM Duramax. After having my new truck in the shop for two weeks and the Dealership tearing down the top end of the engine to complete adjustments to the valves, the Dealership advised that the problem was related to the clutch in the fan. I was surprised with this as one of the first things they did when they first started to diagnose the problem was run the truck with the drive belt removed which they did with no change in the knocking noise. So I have the truck back and have been told that they are now waiting for a plan for repairing the problem from GM. I will update this tread as soon as I hear what the plan is.

I just sent a video from inside my cab to my Dealer for him and the service MGR to listen to.  2020 GMC Denalli 2500HD, 2700 miles and its very loud now.  They are going to send on to GM and see if they have any answers.

 

Hope its something they can correct, its pretty bad to have a brand new 75K truck that sounds like its falling apart.

It’s a knock not a tick. He also told me to drive it and about halfway through oil life if still audible then they might investigate it. It’s a little embarrassing I’ve had a couple people ask me “what’s that knocking?”  I give them the $70k shrug and say it’s normal. Lol. I hope they figure something out. Reprogram an injector if it’s like a fuel knock or something.  Found this thread researching and thought I would chime in. 

I have the same issue gets louder when engine reaches operating temperature. Dealership gave me the ticking printout like everybody else. I had the dealership send videos of it to GM and after a week went buy they said it is normal. Then they gave me a printout. It is not a ticking sound. Frustrated!!!

    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.

I usually set the parking brake (habit) when on flat ground for typical driving.    When backed down on the launch ramp to launch the boat and I place gear selector into Park, the parking brake activates automatically. My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far.
