Rear diff service - 17 Silverado 5.3 G80,

Recommended Posts

Im getting ready to do a  rear diff service on my 17 Silverado - will service tcase and front diff too.

Is the rear gasket reuseable?  Think I will get one just to be safe.  Looked up bolt torque specs, says 15 foot pounds + 20 degrees.

I can use Brake cleaner to spray housing clean?

I reused the gasket on our 2016 Suburban. No issue and it has been 40k miles since I changed it.   You can use brake clean but why?  No need to.  Just go out and drive it to warm up the fluid, pull the cover, let it drain, clean off the cover and magnet and put it back together.  No need to over think it. :)

Just did all the same things a few weekends ago on my 18.  Gasket is reusable and I sprayed the rear differential cover out with brake cleaner.  No issues at all.

What fluid did you use on differentials?......i heard amsoil is all the craze......

I used AMSOIL's Severe Gear 75w-90 in the squeeze pack.  Makes adding the fluid a breeze.

If you are interested in using AMSOIL,  send me a PM with your address and what you want and I can get you a quote delivered to your door.

Valvoline Full Synthetic 75w90 in both front and rear.  I'm not an amsoil user so I can't comment on it.
