My 5.3 on my 18 makes all kinds of sounds on startup. Sounds like piston slap on drivers side. Goes away when it gets warm. My 02 Yukon was the same was. All sorts of noise. Never had an issue.

Piston slap on Gen III LS engines is an overblown issue.  Many engines rebuilt for no reason at all.  Our 2000 Silverado had it at 85k when I bought it and it still has it at 180k now that it is my son's truck.

I hope for the OP's sake that this is just typical engine noise as described in the bulletin that someone provided.  Hard to tell from a recording.

And here I though Amsoil cured all ailments?

I'm not a crazy Amsoil fanboy and will not stand on soapbox like others about it. However the truck performs exactly as the dealer said so I can only relate this comment to pure ignorance and trolling.

Not driving much due to COVID since I only have just 1700 miles on it now.  However, I've kept a very close eye on it.  The sound goes away when it's warmed up properly and no noise at all on acceleration.  My gf keeps telling me that's what a warranty is for....I'm kinda OCD sometimes.

Listen to your girlfriend...60k power train.  Just keep an eye (ear) on it.

An old coworker of mine bought a silverado brand new back in 99 and about 3 years in had the worst case of piston slap i have ever heard. No matter how much i complain about my box of rocks 6.2 di engine, those older piston slap issues were far far worse imo. The engine seriously sounded like he was running with blown header gaskets it was so loud. Like you said though it still ran fine, just sounded like a pile of crap 90% of the time.

My 99 5.3L sounded bad until I started running Mobil-1 5W30 at the suggestion of others on this forum way back in the day and it made a huge difference for me and many others.  Piston slap was still there, but much quieter.

Does anybody have any first hand update on this? I joined just to post that my 2019 Trail Boss Custom 5.3 makes this exact tapping sound. I currently have about 11,000 miles, but it has done it since I can remember. It only does when the engine is cold, such as sitting overnight or starting it up after work. It does not start tapping right away, but once the idle comes down. The tap doesn't seem to have any particular rhythm and will go away after driving it. I have seen others on this forum with the same tapping with V6, the 5.3 and now the 6.2, but with no real update. I've seen posts saying that the dealer replaced lifters, but that it did not fix the noise. I would appreciate any insight.

I'm the OP on this topic.  After extensive research I've deduced that this is normal.  These are very noisy engines when cold.  Manifold ticks when its heating up, the high pressure fuel pump is loud etc.  If it doesn't do it when the engine has warmed up it should be fine.

Thank you for the response Shiva. I had also read many threads and seemed to get mixed responses. Some saying its normal and others seemingly very concerned. I'll admit, I was one of the ones concerned to the point I was truck shopping online this weekend. I guess I'll continue to monitor it and keep you guys posted with any updates.

Upon startup this morning and yesterday and letting  the truck warm up I noticed a off sequence ticking/tapping sound.  I know there is a TSB for lifters so I did the same thing again morning to check.  The noise is still there.  I revved the engine gradually taking it up to 2000 RPM and the noise disappeared.  No DTCs according to my OBD scanner.  See video.  The sound is most prominent from the driver side wheel well.

Do I have an issue or am I just paranoid?  I have a road trip coming up from PA to FL in September and don't want to be stuck on the road.

Did you share what finally happened? My 2019 6.2 is making the exact same noise - Thank you!

@Shiva My 2024 6.2 v8 just went in for the exact same sound. I mean you could put our videos side by side and be a perfect match. They replaced all the lifters on the passenger side. I've had 2 previous vehicles do the exact same thing and I had the lifters replaced by the dealer. My truck also when warmed, the noise would lessen some , but go away completely. I had to leave my truck overnight and gave them specific instructions to leave it in the shop overnight and not outside so that when they started it in the morning it would be inside the shop and the noise could be better isolated. Hope this helps.

How funny that my truck is identical to both of our trucks and the 2nd dealership "could not duplicate the noise". Went there, super friendly, got on the asphalt and in less than a minute started to recognize it - We are on Day 3 and waiting for the call. I am a huge GM fan boy and so want this to be normal but my experience and gut is telling me differently.
