Thanks for adding me.

I just got a 2021 Silverado Z71, I have been around GM trucks for over 50 years, this is my 1st new one.

I have a question regarding the cylinder cancellation (AFM), I have been doing a lot of research read that some 2021's did not have this due to the mico-chip shortage but nothing that will help me find if I do or don't . How can I tell if I have it or not? My engine code is L87. build date 3/21. My buddy's 2017 has a display that tells him what mode it is running in ie: V6-V8. I do not maybe this was dropped in the newer models.

The newer model trucks, beginning in 2019 I believe, do not have AFM, but a newer system called Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM), which operates differently than AFM.  A DFM engine will vary the number of cylinders firing between 2 and 8, unlike the 4 or 8 with AFM.  Consequently, the V4/V8 mode indicator on the dash has been dropped.  As far as to if your truck is one of those affected by the chip shortage, I'll defer to someone else who may have an answer to that.  It would seem to me that either the build sheet (available from GM), and/or the window sticker that was on your truck would say if your engine is equipped with the DFM system.

Thank you for the information, The window sticker just notes 6.2 ECOTEC3 V8. So I *guess* this has the DFM.

Call a dealer and have your VIN handy.

6.2 L87 uses DFM Dynamic Fuel Management.

Only the 5.3 L82 and L84 were affected by the semiconductor shortage.  Window sticker has a $50 discount on it.

All 6.2s for 2021 DFM is operational.

Thanks all, was hoping I hit the lottery and missed out on it.  My first 2021 had the 5.3 without out it, unfortunately I only had it 3 weeks and got hit head on by a red light runner and it was totaled so I got the 6.2 version when I replaced it.

Even if the motors don’t have dfm I believe all the internals are there like the lifters and such to have it. It’s just the micro processors in the ecu I think that’s not. Correct me if I’m wrong plz. Also all 6.2’s have dfm as far I know gm hasn’t removed it from that.

Correct.  They engines are all the same, its just the afm/dfm is not active.

Lots of good info. here thanks.

So now that the newer trucks have dropped the display showing the V8-V6, other than hooking up a scanner there is no way to tell when or how many cylinders are operating at any given time?
