81mmcat Posted July 17, 2021 Posted July 17, 2021 Is there any difference in weight between the two engines?
Sqrls Posted July 18, 2021 Posted July 18, 2021 Yes. I believe the 6.2 is about 150lbs heavier, but that is probably not the correct number. I do know for a fact that the 6.2 and 3.0 Diesel engined trucks sit lower in the front due to the extra weight.
WeGone Posted July 18, 2021 Posted July 18, 2021 (edited) Can not say for sure, but they both use the same block but have different internal specs. The GVW difference may come from the 10 speed transmission vs 8 speed transmission. Not like the old day of small block and big block. Link Edited July 18, 2021 by WeGone 1
Earl Cordova Posted July 18, 2021 Posted July 18, 2021 Depends on what the block is made of. IIRC most 5.3's are iron and most 6.2's are aluminum.

Than the iron block 5.3 would be heaver. Here is a list of what blocks were and the designated RPO. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_LS-based_small-block_engine Edited July 18, 2021 by WeGone
Transient Posted July 19, 2021 Posted July 19, 2021 (edited) Difference is about 100 lbs. Going off vehicle tow ratings. 5.3 w/ 10-speed is rated for 100 lbs more towing than a 6.2 w/ 10-speed. Otherwise, engine architecture is pretty much the same. Edited July 19, 2021 by Transient
WeGone Posted July 19, 2021 Posted July 19, 2021 (edited) Maybe its the way the truck is configured? I just don't see it. In any event 100 lbs. is nothing. I believe that is the other way around, I think most 5.3's are aluminum. I don't hear of many iron block 5.3's especially of the later models. 4.8's and 6.0's I have heard are mostly iron. I could be wrong though, maybe someone has some production numbers. Tyler

KARNUT Posted July 19, 2021 Posted July 19, 2021 If memory serves. Around 2006 the transformation started. The performance engines were aluminum. Originally they went into 4WDS for weight reasons. After 2014 they all were aluminum in 1/2 tons.
newdude Posted July 19, 2021 Posted July 19, 2021 Lots going on here, with info all over the place. Here are the shipping weights for both the 5.3 and the 6.2 long blocks. 5.3 - 462.97lbs 6.2 - 560lbs On 7/18/2021 at 10:02 AM, Sqrls said: Yes. The 5.3 and the 6.2 use the same exact motor mounts and mounting locations. The 6.2 doesn't sit lower than the 5.3. And, all of the 10 speeds for gas and the diesel use the same exact transmission mount, so the 3.0 probably doesn't sit that much lower. 21 hours ago, Earl Cordova said: Depends on what the block is made of. 81mmcat Posted July 19, 2021 Author Posted July 19, 2021 (edited) Thanks newdude should of thought about looking up the shipping weights but I didn't Edited July 19, 2021 by 81mmcat
Transient Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 As I said, 100 lbs difference. I only knew this because I compared the towing numbers of Trail Boss LTs with the 5.3 w/ 10-speed and 6.2 w/ 10-speed.
Sqrls Posted July 20, 2021 Posted July 20, 2021 Based on this, I’d say 6.2 and 3.0 diesel as installed with accessories are roughly the same weight. The 5.3 is obviously lighter.
