2001 Chevy 3500

Recommended Posts

I am considering buying a 2001 Chevy Silverado 3500. This truck has the 8.1L gas with a Allison tranny. It has 237,000mi on it. Any thoughts on if this is a good decision? Experiences members have had with this engine tranny? Life expectancy of this engine?

Thanks for any help you can give!

These are great trucks and there are millions on the road. That could be a lot of miles, depending on maintenance, but that 8.1/Allison combination is unbeatable without going Diesel. The 8.1 is relatively cheap to rebuild, but the Allison is pricy. Expect to rebuild the engine in the next 100K miles, or bolt in a newer one, and be sure to check everything thoroughly before buying. The drivetrain is great, with the 11.5 inch 14 bolt.

I have an '03 K2500HD 6.0/4L80, 180K miles. A step down from the 3500, but essentially the same truck. Very comfortable interior, drives very well and can get parts anywhere. I would have preferred the 8.1/Allison, but couldn't find one I could afford.

Good luck with whatever you decide.
