As for the oil light not coming on when 4qts low, the oil light is not to be trusted and per GM, it's the customers responsibility to check the oil level. The dealer said they have a car now with a blown motor due to virtually no oil and the light never came on

 

As for the tranny, they drove it about 5 miles in all gear patterns and couldn't reproduce anything abnormal - right 5 miles should have done it

 

Because this is not my daily driver and I work from home... I now have to take it out and just burn a tank of gas just to get it back to them to continue the oil test in an attempt to get something done in time for my trip in 5 weeks

The cats do a good job of masking oil burning. I had a truck use 1qt every 500 miles for 12 years. It was stroked and had a whipple S/C. It was a blast. It’s still going. I had a 98 ford that used a qt every 2500 miles. Did the test. They called it normal. At 20K miles I put a vortex S/C on it. At 130K traded it in using the same oil amount. Had a 94 Z-28 using the same amount for 130K miles and 7 years. All showed no smoke, thanks to the cats.

So I did my second oil change today. Put about 2,400 mi on this oil. Mobil 1 5w30 and I decided wanted to see exactly how much came out because I know I put exactly 8qts in. Well exactly 8 quarts came out to the ounce it would appear. I carefully drained it into two empty jugs and did 4qt each. Both went right to the line. 
 

now again, this is only 2,400 and I also didn’t tow anything during this period. 
 

my next oil change will be the free one you get in the first year so I’ll run this til summer. Then I will change every 5k and keep track of it.

In a perfect world I wish you had analyzed that liquid volume to help us understand what is going on for the consuming engines.  A Gas Chromatography run for gasoline in oil volume would be helpful to you and others going forward.  The sad thing about high fuels volumes in oil is we don't know how much of that 8 qts is actually fuel.  Subjective smell is not too accurate.

That would be an exceptionally perfect world because I personally wouldn’t pay to send my oil to have it analyzed. I care about taking care of my vehicles but I draw the line at sending oil in haha.

If you start using oil and GM leaves you in the oil sucking lurch like they have Truston you might sing a different tune my friend.  😉

Yeah I won’t be too happy and feel for those guys who’s trucks are sucking down oil like a drunken sailor.

Me too.  Having an oil burner that is not a diesel would suck big time.  If there's one thing this thread has made me do is check my oil more often.  Hell I've probably used more oil wiping the dipstick off with a non lint wipe than the engine has burned...lol....A few more checks of the oil and I might have to add some.... 🤣

Well back again... Took the Truck and RV for a drive through the country side last weekend to burn a tank of gas. Very pretty with all the wild flowers, oh wait off topic

 

Took the truck back to the dealer, his first comment was, WOW, you are only getting 8.9 MPG, yeah when towing 7000 lbs... His next comment was, no oil used. GM said to bring it back after the next tank of gas. FRICK

 

My guess is they didn't top it off when the first oil consumption test was started, can't prove it but don't really have anything else to explain it

That's great news.  And 8.9 towing 7k lbs is pretty darn good.  We typically get 8 to 9 towing 8k lbs so you're right in the ballpark.  Good stuff and I look forward to your next update as well!!

What was that about 250 miles? She’d really have to be using oil to move on the stick much.

@KARNUT, GM requested an oil level check after a full tank of gas, so ~250 miles and no oil consumed

 

I just took it in for the second tank recheck and no oil consumed, so my guess is they didn't top it off after they changed it to start the oil consumption test.

 

Sucks to know that we drove around for 600 miles being very low on oil and NO Oil Light

 

I'll throw a gal of oil in the back for our trip and check it often

 

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes but for now, the dealer can't find anything wrong

I believe a lot of us thought the same thing, that it wasn't serviced correctly to begin with.  I am super happy that your engine is doing great and you are too.  Here's to the mighty 6.6l engine.  I'm so glad all is good....a happy ending for all.

I took a 1,150 mile road trip earlier this month, driving 19 hours straight only turning the motor off for fuel ups, rest stops, and a 2 hour nap.  Oil life indicator only lost 1% during that whole time from 45% to 44%.

Now that's very interesting.  Sounds like hell for the driving but that is interesting that you only dropped 1% in oil life.

      I am not techy at all but wondered if you have the truck running but sitting still in park as some functions gray out as soon as the truck is moving. I believe in the settings for updates you can choose for it NOT to update and I wonder by chance if maybe that was chosen before and now it won't allow you to chose to press update, I think that is back in the settings menu where it has all the items one wants on or off etc. Also I assume you have a wifi connection and checked that it has some signal strength, not that it would have anything to do with the grayed out updates choice in that case. What I am thinking out loud of here may be be of no value but thought I would suggest it, sometimes it can be the simplest thing that resolves an issue.

      The so called rare failure that some certainly liked to tout ( die hard Ford fan boys ) as per the lifter failing and wiping out the cam. Back when it started happening the blame was being pointed to the lifters and honestly I never did hear anything myself conclusively one way or the other on that. Ford themselves in I believe 2024 had a technical bulletin I will call it that came out and for some engine platforms they were reprograming the engines idle speed but also they had a software update for the oil pump which then some time later was said what that software update did as to be increasing the oil pressure at idle. It is a good question if that issue was completely solved as one Ford specialist mechanic youtuber said he saw failures after that time period. Like anything there would be the variables, what oil is being used and the OCI and how much idle time gets put on an engine. I've seen some comments to claim that the L8T isn't so happy with high idle time either but I also know that companies that require their vehicle to idle a lot on the job don't tend to get the oil changed often enough for all those hours of idle time and go off of the odometer.

      My 2026 Silv. 1500 WT (reg cab/short bed/4wd) has the 40/20/40 with storage in lower middle seat as well as the fold-down center bolster/armrest.   With the dual glove boxes this is about as much storage as possible in a std cab IMHO. Bill

      I have a 2026 base 1500 "WT" regular cab with basic Chevy "Infotainment 3" 7-inch screen/radio. How many speakers do I have If I want to upgrade? Is the audio amp separate from the radio/display unit]? [I listen to classical and it gets a bit raspy at slightly higher volumes. Don't need a sub etc.] Do I have two or 1 speakers in the doors? etc. Thanks Bill  San Jose

      probably won't get a response from that user, as they haven't returned to the site since making that one post.  users don't (at least I don't, and I haven't seen any setting which would notify me via say, email) get any notification other than going to this site, and checking if they got a response on their thread...
