The truck alerted me that I needed to add engine oil! The oil life indicator is at 21%. Current mileage is 18,791. The last oil change was done at 13,217. Since the last oil change I have used 700 gallons of fuel. I read a bulletin that oil consumption is based on fuel use. There's no way 1 qt of oil per 100 gal of fuel is "normal" (service bulletin 03-06-01-023D). While I'm not overly concerned, I've just never had to add oil to a vehicle before as I'm pretty ****** about preventative maintenance. I assume my recent road trip pulling a camper is the cause but it took 2 quarts of oil to read full. Any thoughts and/or comments would be greatly appreciated.

These new 6.6 gas motors are for sure using oil. I have 2 of them and both are using around 1 qt. per 1000 miles. This was even following fresh oil changes that I did myself, so I know they were filled with 8 qts and checked on the dip stick. Both trucks have about 20k miles. Just seems crazy to me!

Instead of guessing and whining somebody oil sample one of the burners to see WHY.  @02BlackSilverado can hook you up and find a off the shelf solution OR get GM to correct what is probably gross fuels dilute.

That’s not good.  What type of use are your trucks seeing?

My last oil change was 2.5qts low in 4500 miles and the dealer said, that's normal... WTF

19961 miles total, 800 on this oil change which is the start of an oil consumption test with the dealer.

The dealer told me the oil light won't come on until about 2 to 2.5 qts low due to the increased capacity and the design of the oil pan... that's news to me but OK

Today coming home, the oil low light came on, remember 800 miles since they changed it a few months back. Well good timing since it's going to the dealer on Tues to look at the transmission...

3 times now, while idling along on the freeway between 12-15 mph, just barely touch the gas and the tranny and the engine get out of sync between RMS and the gear the tranny wants... doesn't sound or feel right

So far, I can't repro it and they said, well if we can't repo it, we will kick it back, at least it will be documented

I was talking today with a friend who is a mechanic for the county road agency.  They got 6 new red 2022  CC 4wd long box K3500 Silverado's with the 6.6L gas engines.  He had nothing buy praise for them, they run the crap out of them idling all the time and different drivers. I specifically asked him about using oil and he he has not heard one complaint about that.

That sounds like the clunky 2-1 downshift these transmissions sometimes do under exactly those conditions. 10-15 mph coasting in 2nd, then you give it a little gas and it shifts to 1st somewhat hard.  The transmission programming seems to learn and it improves in the first few thousand miles. Mine was very repeatable coasting slightly uphill to a particular stoplight near my house. It doesn’t do it anymore. Sometimes the shift is noticeable, but I haven’t had one of those clunky shifts since about 4 or 5k miles. I’m at just about 8k now.

I read the part about idling along on the freeway at 12-15mph multiple times and I’m still at a loss???

low oil light 800mi after an oil change? Yeah your particular truck has a serious issue that they better make right for you.

I sure hope so, dropped it off today with the dealership

The Oil Low light did not come on going there, good thing I had a pic of the dash showing the light and mileage, he looked at me funny when I said I have a pic, want to see it :)

He said he was aware of the hard shift in that low speed range but didn't think anything would be done about it

He had no comment on the Oil Light other than to ask if I added oil or checked it... No and No

Also concerned with some pretty loud clunking when in 4 low, backing up, go to park and set the brake... they will look at that as well

Fingers crossed

Another update.....Current mileage is 35,305. Oil life indicator is 52%. Last oil change was 31,778. Checked dipstick and it showed low..... see pic....added 1 quart, still showed low, added 1 more, now shows full. Total fuel consumption is about 464 gal so still well within GM's spec. Just the way it goes I guess!

I may be 'normal' for them to make them like this but....I'm not buying any as long as it is.

It’s strange that in the same engine family some can use oil and be called normal. While some use non. I had a 94 z-28 and a 94 impala ss. One use 1qt every 2500 miles. Also 3 4.6 Ford pickups. One used oil. They said normal. They all lasted normal miles. Never got any worse. The Z did clog the cat at 100K miles.

To all of you having excessive oil consumption on Chevrolet 2500hd trucks, I got my 2020 HD 6.6 gas new on Dec. 2020.

My truck has 28,000 miles on it now. 5 weeks ago the low oil massage came on. I needed 2 1/2Q of oil. Got my oil changed

last week and was low again of 2 1/2Q. That's 5 F***** Quarts between oil changes ( 6500mi )! My Chevy dealer is looking in to it. Been doing a lot of research on the matter ( social media, YouTube, Web, Etc. ) Seems this has been an on going issue for some time with GM. Looks like from my research that GM have not fixed this problem even in the newer 6.6 gas. I have owned a least 15 Chevy trucks in my life and non of them have ever used oil. This is happing in other GM lines as well, not just the trucks. If my GM dealer does not come up with a fix I have no choice but dump this truck. I'm a contractor and need a heavy, reliable truck for my work. Unfortunately I will probably never buy another GM truck.

I can't help but wonder if the dealer put the correct amount in during the change because that's a lot of oil consumed.  Did you check it right after they changed it to make sure it was at the top of the dipstick?  Probably a dumb question but again, that's a lot of oil being used on a 28k mile engine if they put in the required 8 quarts.

That's crazy and I'm sure very disheartening.  I know as ****** as I am about fluid levels and concerns with noises and everything else that that would drive me nuts.  Sorry that's happening to you.  I'm only at 5900 miles and it hasn't used a drop.  But I'm sure it could start in the future, not a good thought.  Have you thought about possibly trying a different oil?  I know I would for sure.
