It's been awhile since I posted and didn't really like the new style of forum posting as it seems more tuned to phones.  I am not much into phones?  Guess that makes me old...Oh.well!

I just had a major, major mechanical fiasco the other day.  The truck just wouldn't get up to temp so I watched "her" real close.  Normally, I have AM radio cranked up and HOT COFFEE and paying attention to the other idiots on the road seems like a better idea than watching my dummy gauges.  Long story short is $70.00 for a thermostat/all in one with housing about made me crap my pants because prices are going up but this is rather obscene don't ya think?  I don't know what else to say really other than I am gunning for Cadillac Luke on mileage and keeping Grumps at bay from my mileage!

As a reminder folks:  AFM is enabled, and every other thing like the junk 8speed is all original and like grumps says, "It runs perfectly fine until it finally dies" It's great to be the luckiest GM owner on the planet because this thing is classic GM Body of Frame truck.....runs forever!

Oh boy are you lucky. Pepper is in her seasonal down time at 151,556 miles and still without issue. 😉 Luke cracked 200K some months ago. Popped in. Popped out and like smoke....gone again.

Sticker shock on that thermostat? They were at one time listing $90. At some price people just quite paying. I pitched that over priced scrap and installed this from IPSOCO and run a standard good old 54 mm SBC Stant or Gates Super. Not a breakdown part but a "Shinny...I want Precious" sort of thing.

A year or two ago I replaced this starter shield that was rubbing on the flywheel ring gear. Drove me nutty.

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

About $20 in "repair" parts over 150K miles.

Finally put tires on it at 125K 😱

How about some pictures of that whip Mooooook?

turned 150k this week. finally just did brakes and rotors, found both rear seals leaking so i replaced them also. a week later the pinion seal is leaking wtf. had to put the truck in the shop to change the thermostat for a second time because it wouldnt get to operating temp. i decided to check the rear axle vent and found it was plugged at the hose connection on the diff, cleaned that out and no more rear diff leaks. i know my tranny is on its way out but will see how much further it will go

OP, how many trans fluid changes? At what mileage did you replace shocks?

I replaced factory fill at somewhere around 15k.  Something just didn't feel right and have replaced with brand new fluid every 30k +/- a few k.  The wire harness in trans that read Temp failed.  I put new shocks all around probably around 30k with Bilsteins and actually think it's time to replace again but that was 4qty for under 400.00 and that ain't happening again....LOL probably more like 1k now because I want the all in ones with springs.

This is the 8speed as stated in post and honestly it's finicky loves HIGH/TEMPS and high torque!  Lug the trans and it will ride like ******!  Smash the peddle and it's quick and smooth.  It's 100% dependent on the intake and GM 8-pin MASS with humidity or any relative humidity in the air!  Change anything on the 8L90 that effects temp and ECU readings and it shifts like ******!

Trust me put in a different T-Stat to affect the time to operating temperature which you may never get to in higher latitude areas during winter driving even after 1hr+ driving?  Everything is catalogued and documented on this fine, fine automobile.

It likes to run HOT,HOT and that's just what it was engineered for I guess?  I am going to change the starter in couple weeks because I am about closing in on 7K starts and I think it's about time.

I also have a fine, fine report card @150K on used oil analysis and it's such a stud I think I am going to keep it for another 50-250K?

It's always great to see positive threads like this! 🙂

Clocking in at about 109k so I'm not quite that high in mileage yet, however I just fixed my first mechanical issue of the year with the manifold bolts (prior to getting that fixed the truck was driving kinda bad for a while), got on the highway for the first time since that repair, and HOLLLYYY crap it surprised the hell out of me.

This truck is almost 8 years old with almost 110k miles and it genuinely surprised me with its power and smooth shifting.  Isn't that something?

Oh by the way, also AFM enabled, bone stock, only difference is I have the 6-speed. 😉

It's a damn good reliable truck if you keep the upkeep on it.  I could put some electrical tape on odometer and with a damn near perfectly complected interior the occupant would never believe the mileage.  The reason I drive GM's is pretty simple cost of maintenance, parts procurement and longevity.

AC thermostat for our Suburban was $35 on Amazon.  From what I found out after the fact, you can change the actual thermostat and not have to get the entire housing.

    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
    • So, lot's of googling and reading, and a trial fit found, that indeed they hit the newer fatter caliper. I did some re-testing today, and found just 3/16" worth of washers was enough for the wheel to spin freely. I added 2 more on each, and again it spun freely. Tested lock to lock with the 4 washers, about 5/16" not quite the 3/8" Im considering, but pretty close. No issues. I've been looking at the BORA .375" spacers and using extended lugnuts to get back lost thread due to the spacer. All the ET lugs I've seen are all .33" reach inside the wheel lug holes. For those that don't like spacers or think they're unsafe, I think it depends on what type of spacers you're using and making sure you get good quality hubcentric ones, and if you're using bolt on ones, regular mainenance, checking the spacer lugs. Not wanting or needing that much spread. Looking for the minimum that will let me run these rims and tires.  it does look to stick out a little, but I really want put these on. and use the stock all-terrains in the winter.
