I am thinking about buying the silverado ZR2 , but i am worried about the 6.2 reliability how reliable is it ? I read alot about it some people say its invincible and some say its not , anyone have experience with it ? I only tried the vortecs 4.8,5.3,6.0 those are reliable as hell never had issues with them but with all the lifter failure i am hearing about should i be worried ?

Love my 6.2 and get the same mileage as the 5.3 I had, just cost more to fill up as I run high test only.  The lifter issues were on both the 5.3 and 6.2, I would hope they have it worked out by now as it was supposed to be only builds thru March 21. Lots of information here about it.

Nearly 2-years and 20,500 miles and I contnue to be happy with my 6.2! 

No problems (other than the rear wondow leak..resolved), great peformance, reasonable mpg's and overall solid build, I'm well satisfied!

Over 3 years, 33,000 miles and zero issues with my 6.2, I love it, no regrets and if something happened to the truck that required me buying a new one I'd buy the 6.2 again in a heartbeat!

Almost 3 years, 34,000 miles and Truck has been great.  Would buy the 6.2 again for sure.

Had a 2018 GMC 6.2L with 8 Speed old AFM never had issues. Had 35k on it when sold it. Got excellent mileage.  Averaged 23 mpgs all day long running 70 mph to work.  Only reason I got rid of it was because of the 1 to 2 jerky/clunk shifting of the transmission.  Never felt right driving in town. On highway is was smooth. 

 

Have a 2019 High Country 6.2L with 10 Speed. Best truck I've owned except gas mileage isn't close to my Sierra. But I love the extra room of T1's over K2 body style. The 10 speed is a game changer.  

 

I too have thought about a ZR2.  Awesome looking truck, I just feel for the price of $72K fully loaded, GM needed to offer more power, bigger wheel options, and a panoramic sunroof for that price.

2018 6.2 crew cab standard bed SLT. Excellent engine. 8L90 has been fine for me except cold shifting is a bit clunky and lurches until warmed up then it shifts excellent. I prob have the hydroscopic trans fluid still but i'm in dry AZ and its only got 18k miles on it so will attempt to flush myself at 30k miles. Friends and I notice the not smooth idle of the 6.2 but its totally normal. Towed 7klbs from 1k ft elevation to 7k ft and no issues going 70 mph up long grades. Premium gas is the downside especially in my area where its at least 40 - 60 cents more than regular. Still I'd choose the 6.2 again. Only other motor I would consider is the 3.0 I6 Duramax since it has all the torque of the 6.2 at a nice low rpm with excellent mpg but downside is 2/3 the hp of the 6.2.

Of course the 5.3 is a good engine as well but for the small premium upcharge go for the 6.2 if its available in the truck you want.

They say that the lifter problem was isolated to a bad batch back in early 2021.  The previous trucks used the same lifters I think and they didn't have nearly as many problems as the recent 6.2L's have had.  It's a great engine, and GM is fixing them when they go bad, even after warranty in some cases.  I wouldn't worry about it and buy what makes you happy.

8 speed is now only used on the 2.7L T engine.

3.0, 5.3 and 6.2 all use the 10 speed.

    • With large equipment or deep mud it is more of a use the higher gear to avoid spinning tires, getting stuck because of spinning tires and doing damage to your machine. The idea is if you run out of torque before you spin tires you can still downshift for more torque. If you are just spinning your tires in the lowest available gear you are stuck and things break.   Automatic transmissions, traction control and electronic transfer cases change the calculation a little as you the driver have less control over each piece. 
    • are there any codes? with lots of rust, perhaps disconnect/clean both sides of the connection/examine cable ends (the wires) for corrosion going into the sheath & replace if necessary/reconnect ALL the power AND ground cables between the battery, engine, frame, cab, fuse box and starter charm.li (website) has a no-start diagnostic procedure you can work through to get it working.
    • Its no wonder you've gravitated to the oil types and brands you have in later years after trying certain brands and one being a specialty oil or at least very hard to come by up here and the other would have been a commonly found oil of the era and the vastly different outcomes as a result to using the vehicles in question the same distance for an OCI . It shows what marketing hype can do without actually having the product to back up the claims and that is no different now with the insane claims that are written on the side of a bottle of oil from some of the off the shelf oils.    What has surprised me and I was already finding this out before I bought my truck with the GDI engine, that this newer fancy technology that seemingly would suggest better fuel economy/emissions with this high pressure spray of fuel is not in reality kind at all to the engine or at least the oils life. Yet they insist on claiming long OCI with this technology just like they did with the port or similar type fuel injection systems when in reality its a step back in oil life to have a GDI system.    I think the mistake your making Grumpy is that your not sending your samples to Blackstone and getting the feel good glowing report that you can run it another 1000 or more miles and then send another sample where they say run it yet another 1000 miles and on and on it goes until your sending in something that looks a lot like road tar and then they may suggest you change your oil within the next 1000 miles 😆
    • I am guessing that engines of that design back then had a better ability to be abused and survive longer than a new design engine with the long timing chain and the overhead cams and phasers etc. But I would never guess that an engine could go that far and not fail spectacularly or at least die a slow death. 
    • In the 80's 90's I'd run Honda's 7,500 miles between changes using Red Line HP 5W20 and do it for hundreds of thousands of miles with issues. Back in the day it was an SAE 20 with the HTHS of a SAE 30 and SN add load. It was also very polar. Oxidation VOA was over 120. Besides those motors were SPFI and lean burn tech. I could have likely run it longer but never did.    We had a Toyota bought new I ran on Pennzoil's latest and greatest synthetic of the day with "Penthane". A made up word for a very low dose of PAO. Tried 7,500 mile OCI's in that Group III/VI chemistry and the rings tapped out at 90K. Rocker box wasn't as bad as the one Punch put up but it wasn't good either. Also a SPFI motor.    I'm around 3,750 across the board on these GDI monsters and the oil it tapped out by then usually on TBN/TAN crossover and color. Red Line HP Euro.    The AMSOIL SS brochures tell you to follow the OEM values for the service class but that it can be run up to 25K if monitored. I can't imagine what motor could go that distance and not tap out. I've never owned one.    Yes, I know. Lot's of people do. I'm just not going to be one of them.
