So I was just driving along this afternoon and had the worst tire blowout I have ever seen. My rear left panel and tailgate are wrecked. 

 

Backround, always rotated tires.. TPMS all normal, 43K On stock tires, no lifts or mods. 

 

Anyone seen this or know what to do?

Nothing you can do really. They make hundreds of thousands of Goodyear tires every year, so the failure rate is small but can happen. Just look at all the blow outs of the side of the road from semi trucks. It can be a newish tire and all of the sudden something happens that upsets the structure of the tire and BAM. A minor tear in the lining, bad belt from the manufacturing process is all it takes when there is 80psi or 100+ psi in the tire.

 

You're tire didn't really even blow out though as it's still holding air, just the tread cap de-laminated which could be a manufacture defect that took a long time finally give out. Goodyear won't help you here, neither would a dealership so you'll need to contact your insurance company for this.

I had the same thing happen to a tire that had a slow leak and felt like it had thrown a weight. it actually blew out though with 80psi and over a ton in the bed it seperated the side of the bed from the floor and scared the dickens out of me. I'm surprised you didn't have a vibration before it came apart

Gotcha... Thanks guys. Yea, was holding 80psi and didn't have a vibration for about 10 minutes, pulled over and inspected everything and didn't have anything stand out..... Wasn't hauling, so definitely it just caught me off guard and figured I'd check here... 

 

Going though insurance now, sucks but oh well... Going back to Nitto tires.

Goodyear sucks.  I will not keep a goodyear tire on any vehicles I buy.  We had tire sidewall and tread separation at about 30,000 on the goodyears on our impala that we bought new in 2012, car was only a little over 2 years old.   Dealer and local goodyear store said they saw it a lot with the goodyear tires.  I contacted goodyear, and they said their "performance tires" were not guaranteed against that type failure.  Luckily I caught it before it caused a blowout and possible wreck.  I made it a point, when I was using the locator, to find my new truck with any tires other than goodyears.  My 2020 had Michelins on it from the factory.  I had about 14,000 on the Michelins and just recently changed to a more aggressive tire.

My brother bought a 1974 Torino new after basic training. Going slow it would wiggle from new. Firestone tires. It got worse. While being stationed in South Carolina he worked part time at sears. He could  buy tires from sears at a discount among other things just being first married. Guess who made sears tires, your right Firestone. Turns out it was a major problem for Firestone and Sears. He finally bought bias ply tires.

Looks like tread separation versus a road hazard.  Probably caused by dry rot.  Tires in Florida generally speaking have a maximum life of about 4 years regardless of miles.  

 

Glad you weren't injured.

the regional tire store in this area won't repair or balance tires older than 5 years. There are lots of used tire places in Fla  and other places selling questionable tires. after that blowout I said no more used tires and bought a set of new  Firestones

When we got my mother in law’s CRV it was 6 years old with 6K miles. I wonder about the tires. The manual says 7-10 years. I took it discount tires for a rotation they said they were fine. Even though there wasn’t any visual indication of wear I change to tires that were quieter.

Makes no sense to me, a person has a bad experience with a product and that manufacturer is banned. Every manufacturer of every product, yes that covers all of them can make a bad one. Maybe that line of a product should be avoided but not every product they make.

I guarantee every male has had a bad experience with a female and they weren't banned. 😀

I am not banning anything. I prefer Nitto tires, and since this is what comes with the truck, I kept them... Apparently too long.

I think the 20" tires max out at 70psi ..thats the max inflation on my 21 custom 2500

Load range E tires has maximum cold inflation pressure of 80 psi.  Manufacturer can lower the pressure from there to meet loading conditions or performance targets.

When the local goodyear tire store and dealer say they see the issue a lot with that particular brand, and I have had issues with the same brand, that seems more than just an isolated incident.  I have had other issues with goodyear tires as well, had a set on my old 98 k2500 that wore prematurely despite being rotated every 5k.  What really griped my ass was how goodyear as a company responded.  After how they chose to talk to me as a customer with an issue with their tires on a car that was 2 years old, I decided that they must not want my business.

    • Thanks - I wasn't quite caffeinated this morning. 2:1 makes sense, turning the crankshaft 360 degrees will turn the cam 180 degrees, and had I done that, the cam's dot would be at 6 and the crank's at 12 again.   I went ahead and took the sprocket off anyway, aligned everything dot-to-dot including the balance shaft just for s&g. I'm glad I did because I discovered no Loctite on the timing sprocket bolts. Maybe it's not required, but at only 20 ft-lb torque spec, those bolts aren't in there very tight. Cleaned and reassembled with some thread locker and torqued.   A general observation: Less is more with RTV. If a little doesn't stop a leak, a LOT probably won't, either. RTV is thinly veiled revenge, in a tube...      
    • The timing marks are ok, that is #1, you can turn it over until they line up and it won't change anything, the crankshaft turns twice for every camshaft revolution, I have always set up SB Chevs as your pic shows using a straight edge
    • Someone's been here before.... There is a receipt for a 3-piece timing set, purchased earlier this year.   Is this picture something, or, nothing?   I have the timing cover off and my crank is perfectly TDC and the keyed gear's locating mark is dead on 12 o'clock.   The cam gear locating mark is also at 12 o'clock. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the install guides say the two locating marks should meet and be perfectly aligned when installing a timing set. The mark on the crank should be dead on 12:00 and the cam gear's mark should be dead on 6:00, and both marks should be perfectly vertically aligned.   I believe the timing gear is keyed or has a dowel that ensures it can only be installed on the cam in one position, so I have to believe the cam is out of phase somehow. At the very least, with a triangular bolt pattern, it can only be installed in one of 3 different positions.   Before I pulled the front cover, the truck was running alright, no service engine soon lights except an occasional P0172 / rich condition. Timing -16 timing at idle (should be +16), and total -35% fuel trim, two conditions I haven't been able to figure out.   In related news, my injector tested pretty well, wasn't leaking, but I had it rebuilt anyway, and it's on it's way back to me.         Along with this discovery, the good and bad:   Good: The oil pan seal appears undamaged.   Bad: -The timing cover has been reused, and the positioning dowels have been broken. That could explain some of the leaking. -Some kind of white paste or grease was used to try to seal the oil pan seal and timing cover (since wiped off..). -Then, someone globbed silicone all over the front of the cover and also buried the ckp sensor in it. But, they didn't put any inside the cover or use RTV to try to seal the oil pan seal with the timing cover (good).
    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.                 
    • It also depends on what criteria someone is using for “best” when talking filters.  Are we going off best efficiency?   Best quality/QC?  Etc. because the two may not mutually exclusive.
