Boost Auto Tow Mirrors?

Anyone care to comment on the actual towing functionality of the Boost Auto Tow Mirrors? I just bought them for my 2021 Trail Boss. I didn't realize that they didn't extend/retract until I opened the box today. I tow a 30' camper and previously used the extendable type tow mirrors on my 2014 Silverado. Thinking about sending them back and purchasing the extendable mirrors from GM. I welcome any opinions from current owners of these mirrors. My truck has been in the shop for a couple weeks and not exactly sure when I'll get it back, so I can't test them out at the moment. Thanks!

The newer tow mirrors are about as wide as the old style tow mirrors were, at full extension. I have them on my 2022 LTD and they are great, even when not towing. If you decide to keep them, hopefully my install video will help you out. See below.

Be aware that when running with them in the pulled in position, the new style GM tow mirrors, along with the revised 'A' pillar, together create a much bigger blind spot (especially on passenger side) than the previous generation mirrors.

 

I have been a user and fan of tow mirrors for many years. 

 

Ran '10, '11, '16, '18 and '21 with tow mirrors.

Ran a '15 with regular mirrors.  Lack of tow mirrors was one reason I switched to the '16.

 

Current '23 has standard mirrors, in part because I'm driving more often in mare situations where the blind spot is a nuisance. 

 

I 'feel' (long time since I drove the '15 or similar) that the rear visibility is better with the newer type of standard mirrors. 

Haven't towed one of the enclosed trailers with this truck yet.   I don't tow a travel trailer.

 

I don't tow much anymore.

I'm thinking I'll try the clip-on style if I decide the standard mirrors aren't doing the job.

Thanks for the input guys. I got my truck back and installed them. I haven't towed the camper yet, but these Boost Auto mirrors seems to be about an inch shorter than my dad's 3500's mirrors when they're fully extended. They'll likely do just fine. I liked the idea of keeping the BSM and front spotlights, something the GM tow mirrors are lacking on the 1500's. Unfortunately, they misinformed me about the front spotlights working as plug-n-play. My stock (non-towing) mirrors had the front spotlights, but they don't work on the Boost Auto mirrors. They offered to refund the $40 for their error. I think I can live without that feature. I may eventually order the harness to get all the lights working anyway.

I will say, I have never heard of this company before and went to check them out. They have a pretty awesome looking running board that I am debating on getting now so thank you OP for posting.

They seem to have some nice products. This is my first purchase from them. Their support is top notch, they answer any questions within hours (email).

Awesome.... so the wiring for the signals is already there, just not being used?

I wanted to start installing the Boost Auto towing mirrors but when I opened the box there was only the mirrors, no wiring harness', or parts, nothing but the mirrors. So, I called them, and they wanted pictures of whatever was in the box and the empty box itself. Then they realized that they forgot to include the wiring harness, the wireless control modules and whatever else I had ordered. So, now I'm waiting for those parts to arrive, and I checked the USPS tracking and they have not shipped yet! Damn it, I thought I'd have the mirrors installed by now. I think I'm going to start taking my truck apart, so I can be ready when the parts do arrive. All I can do now is install the mirrors and that is it until the other parts arrive.

But I must say, their customer service was on the ball and agreed that they made a mistake right from the get-go. I just wish they would have overnighted the parts. But I guess, it is what it is.

Their customer service is really great. I had to have one of my mirrors replaced and they made the process pretty painless.

 

As stated above, these mirrors do create one hell of a blind spot compared to the previous generations. I literally have to look up and over or around the mirrors in many intersections as it's a big enough blind spot to block an entire vehicle. However, they do a good job while towing my 30' camper. I just wish these extended and retracted, I didn't realize that they didn't until I opened the box.

 

Good luck on your installation. I didn't purchase any of the extra wiring, so most of the added functionality (lights) don't work. I may add that in the future though.

I'm in the progress of installing the Boost Power towing mirrors. I'd be lying if I said this install was easy. In fact, it's a lot of work but I move very slowly and take a lot of breaks and even a couple of naps. 😔 All I have left to do is put the truck back together and see if everything works. Actually, I'll be very surprised if they do work. The wiring was especially difficult for me because my eyes aren't what they used to be and I'm working with one hand. My right hand was in a cast and now in a brace and it's very painful to even use it. I'm right-handed and can't do s***t with my left so I had to stop frequently to ice my hand. I'm just too damn old to do this type of work and because this install is so involved it would have cost a small fortune to have someone do it.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Well, I'm at a complete standstill. I was hoping to finish by this weekend but unfortunately, tomorrow I'm having heart surgery and have no idea when I'll get back at it, but I'll let you know when I do.

Good luck with the truck and I hope the heart surgery went well. If you haven't already, you should give Boost Auto a call to help you through th install. They have pretty good support. Take care!

      I tried tapping it.  This might sound like a dumb question, you should feel vibration or some type of noise when it turns on? Can someone please verify? Thank you all!

      I feel better now for my own view point and actions or lack there of towards the dealership service theme reading your post and others. GM corporate is who offers the two free oil changes on the HD trucks and I bought my truck in Feb of 2025 and those oil change offers run out within 2 years I believe and I highly doubt I will be using either one of them. I had asked if I could officially give those free services to another customer ( a friend ) and they said no, its all a GM corporate thing based on the vehicle in question. What that service advisor did however was go into a little story about how such and such customer was denied engine warranty because he had done his own oil changes because then they are not documented ... you see where that goes and so an employee playing the game of scaring the customer into having the service work done there most certainly triggered my thought process. At a later date I did talk to the person who handles warranty claims at the dealership and she said to be sure to document the oil changes and keep receipts for the oil and filter ( coped the receipts from cases of Mobil oil and case of filters I bought from them ) and the vehicles VIN, the date of service, mileage etc and staple that together as a record I would give them if that was ever needed and I keep my own log book for services for each vehicle as well. Oh and about 8 months after I bought the truck the dealer starts calling me to offer a maintenance service since they haven't seen my vehicle show up on their system ... for the mere fee of 300.00 Canadian to change the oil and rotate the tires and a few other minor checks and I declined the offer, I get the call again a couple of months later for the same thing and she could tell I was not interested and she asked if they should take my name off the call list and I said yes, do that !.    By the way did you happen to keep your factory oil filter to open it up and see the surprises inside as I expect some will show up as per the odd little sliver of metal shaving and particles that the filter does trap along with bits of grey silicone sealer that come off of the inside edge of mating surfaces. I have cut open every filter so far on my truck although few miles but have changed the oil often and the second filter was vastly better with very little of anything, that first filter was the unsettling one as I expected it would be.

      I get why they do this…but man…not ideal. I only extract on inboard boat engines because the drains are buried and even then I hate it because it’s easy to leave a quart behind with that method.   They should market it as an “oil refresh” not oil change!

      I only get oil changed where I can watch. Valvoline pulls through the dipstick into a see thru glass. When done they show me the dipstick. About the only way they can mess up is using the wrong oil. But that secret wouldn’t stay secret long. Honda uses TQ wrenches on everything. You can watch through a plate glass window. Discount tires does that with tires. Trust but verify.

      I would not argue that with you. It would be pointless to argue against the truth and you speak the truth.    My question and in fact the entire point of this thread is an exploration into the levers of wear which happens no matter how well we maintain our powertrains.    Some of these levers we exert a good deal of influence over which can and do result is lower wear, longer powertrain life. Some others we are sort of stuck with.    An engine is typically done when the ring to bore seal no longer is able to do the job effectively. Normally the first thing to go in a engine otherwise well maintained and adult driven is this seal.    Looking into the means, methods, products and attitudes that influence the rate of wear seems a worthwhile inquiry to me.
