Anybody get a notice for this recall?  I was at the dealer the other day sniffing around about trading in my 2020 and they said I had an open recall.  I ASSumed they were talking about the tailgate recall that didn't apply to my truck, but just for grins I checked my VIN and it came up with this.  Have not gotten a letter or email.

GM Program #

N242454440

Status

Incomplete. Remedy not available

NHTSA

24V797

Date Issued:

2024-10-24

Description

General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain: 2020 – 2022 model year Chevrolet Silverado 1500/2500/3500 and GMC Sierra 1500/2500/3500; and 2021 model year Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with diesel engines. A transmission control valve in some of these vehicles may be susceptible to excess wear over time, resulting in a gradual loss of pressure within the valve that can cause harsh shifting. In rare cases, the rear wheels may experience a momentary lock up.

Safety Risk Description

If the rear wheels lock-up momentarily while driving, there is increased risk of a crash.

Repair Description

Dealers will install new transmission control module software that will monitor valve performance and detect excess wear approximately 10,000 miles (16,000 km) before a wheel lock up condition could occur. Once detected, the transmission will be limited to fifth gear, preventing the possibility of a wheel lock up condition, which occurs in a downshift from eighth gear. A service engine light and reduced propulsion message will also display in the instrument panel.

Sort of odd given the transmissions for the big SUVs and light duty pickups are ten speed (jointly produced between Ford and GM i believe) vs. the six speed for the HD gassers/ten speed Alison for the oil burners for those years.

I did have both a '21 and '22 with the ten speed Alison and have not seen any recall for either of them and GM for some reason still periodically sends me stuff for both lol.

Another article said the notices are not supposed to be sent out until early December.

Does anyone know the differences as to why the 23+ HD's are not being included in this? Did GM make some changes that would prevent the lockup on these trucks?

I have been trying to find a bolt on Allison Thermal Bypass kit but I can't find one for this year. Closest was the 21.

After looking into this further, it looks like the 10L1000 that we get in the HD trucks is made by GM under the watchful eye of Allison. The 10R80 is found in the 1/2 ton trucks. This is the unit the GM and Ford worked on together.

It may be the 23's and newer have an updated TCM that already does what the recall is supposed to address.

It seems that the valve body needs some help due to soft materials and the rubbing of the pistons controlling the valving.

There are some other issues as well that cause issues like a sticky thermostat causing overheating.

Seems like both these units are experiencing similar issues.

I received mine last week... I think it sucks for the 15 year/150k mile coverage.

FWIW, I got one on my Escalade for the airbag and waited several years for the parts to become available. We'll see...

I just had mine in for this recall yesterday.  I'm very disappointed in the "solution" that GM came up with to address it. All it amounts to is a software update that will monitor wear on the valve body.  When it detects that you are within 10,000 miles of a potential failure it will immediately throw the truck into Limp mode and limit you to a max of 5th gear. They have no intention of replacing any parts or doing a real fix until you actually have that happen.

I'm headed to AZ next month - 1,500 miles from home.  5th gear item going to get me and an 8,000# trailer back home. Dealer said that these valve bodies can take months to get on back order.  So am I supposed to just roll the dice and hope it doesn't happen? I can't  sit 1,500 miles from home waiting on a part. I have zero confidence in this truck to take it on any long trips.

All this recall does is cover GM from liability.  It does not fix the problem. They are going to let the owners sit wherever they happen to be at the time a potential failure is detected.  They absolutely need to reengineer the part that can cause the failure and replace it.  Or at a bare minimum at least give us a warning 5,000 miles before throwing it into Limp mode and effectively disabling the truck wherever it happens to be.

I just went through this sort of game with Toyota. Mine was under the engine recall so probably waiting about 12 to 15 months to get an engine.

We had no faith that the truck would not blow up so we cancelled all our trips and stopped using the truck for towing.

Finally, we decided to get out of it and into a Chevy 1 ton with a solid engine and we have this potential issue with a highly regarded manufacturer of transmissions?

It does really suck that manufacturers are beta testing. The valve body thing seems like a swing and a miss. Mine isn't under recall but I am really considering the seal kit from Next Gen and just putting it in. It would stop the wear which leads to the issues down the road.

We have a bunch of trips planned this year and we aren't going to cancel them.
