OMG!!! I haven’t painted a house since my early 20s with my first house. I met my brother in law at his new house Monday. He’s replacing the wood floors so the ceiling was getting repainted. He was doing the trim I was using a roller on a stick. Easy right? Two coats. 16,000 steps each day 3 days of painting. So yesterday I drove home. There isn’t a muscle that’s not involved and pissed off.😡 The whole process reminds me why I use professionals. My wife was completely astonished of my effort. I told her don’t get any ideas. I’m still using professionals. My kids will just get a little less inheritance. It did it because I enjoy my brother in-laws company. I can’t wait to start on his firebird.

100% agree, 2 years ago when my wife's dad passed away myself and her brother had to get her dad's house in shape to sell I was the same way you were body wise from my neck down to my feet hurt then stiff the next day from painting my neck and shoulders hurt the worst from using the rollers. The next day my knees and legs joined the pain from lower trim work. At 60 years old iam not built for this anymore. After 40 years of physical lifting, climbing body abuse etc work to my body it has caught up to me.

In my construction career I did drywall, worked as a painter, carpenter, part time electrician helper, plumber helper and HVAC for a while. Every morning I wake up and assess the body before getting out of bed, then standing is the next assessment.

I learned a lot and got paid to do it but the body is paying the price.

I serviced the transmission yesterday in our Hyundai Santa Fe, crawling around on the garage floor with the car on ramps, not a good morning.

My left shoulder is still healing from surgery, it's in the worst shape. The dexterity in my left hand and I'm left handed is almost non existent. I have trouble writing, doing buttons, starting nuts and bolts, using a ratchet or wrench. I have to rely on my right hand and that's a challenge. Doc said it could be a year for me to get normal again.

I won't bring up my back.

I can’t even get the hood open on my project 78 Jeep J20 truck. It’s in garage and ready for me and my body and mind crapped out. I’m gonna have to hire a pro to get it in proper shape. Stan hats off that you could even do that. IMG_8983.thumb.jpeg.e95c5307a1ec0a7703bc32e9c4cc2662.jpeg

Arthritis runs in the family I have a mild case in the elbows. My brother in law is like his father. He never stops. He’s been headhunted 3 times in ten years. So with every house he has to put his signature on it. Finish the garage cabinets, seal the floor, drywall the works. Redo the pantry. So he does his regular job and works on the house. He’s still finishing the house he’s leaving. He’s a horse. He’s redoing the new one too. All the furniture he’s moved so far is in the master bedroom, and garage. From all his moves over the years his retirement house has five bedrooms, media room, living room, dining, kitchen three car garage attached and a two car detached garage. Plus outside kitchen, living area that flows to a pool. All his upgrades to previous homes in the last 30 years have led to his retirement home. When I asked him if he realizes the work that going to be involved with upkeep. Along with restoring his firebird. His answer is his wife would drive him crazy is he just laid around. So he’s making the two car garage his man cave and restoration shop. After the firebird he’s doing others. Long story short, he kept himself in fighting shape. Most do it yourself individuals will understand that. Me I’ll do my morning walks, a little yard work. And park my lazy butt in front of the TV. Once a month I’ll help him. And bare the pain and recover watching the tube.

My issues from abusing my body are manageable and not constant. My stamina is really good in the winter. That’s when the real work gets done. Waxing the truck, that kind of stuff. The painting I really pushed past what I thought was my limit. I was really worried about lingering pain. So far nothing unusual.

Yeah, when it comes time to paint this place I will be calling in the Pro's.  Not my cup of tea and the house was just painted back in 2019 so I hope it will hold up for at least 15 years.  We lucked out on this place. They completely remodeled inside and new paint and roof outside. So it basically is like a new house.  They even spent the money and had 3/4" oak floors put in everywhere but the bedrooms and baths.  Bedrooms have carpet and baths have tile.

I've been replacing our back deck. Got tired of replacing boards and painting every year. We are going back with TimberTech Advanced PVC. After taking up all the decking, the joist were shot so I had to replace all 27 of them. The deck is 44'4" x 19'.  I amazing how long it has taken me.  My body has been hurting like I was back in high school and was my first week of football practice.  What didn't help was I fell backward onto the joist and cracked my 11th rib. So needless to say that slowed me down some.  I'm hoping to get it all finished up before Christmas. We are getting the last of the deck boards and fasteners delivered on Tues.  This has been an expensive endeavor, it is what I call, buy once, cry once.

On the last day of the painting project my brother in law asked me. Well, would you have spent the money or do you have pride of a job well done? About that time he could hear his sister, my wife laughing in the next room. I said there’s your answer.

Years ago me, the wife and our teen lived in an open floor plan home and she decided that she wanted to change the  color to a tan which entailed painting the living room, breakfast nook, dining room and kitchen. She decides on a color so I get the paint. That Saturday her father and I spent the entire day painting while she was out shopping. As soon as she stepped in the door she protested that there is pink in the color and didn't like it and wasn't having it. So, during the week she was getting sample colors and striping a wall to get her selection right. The following Saturday the father in law came back over and we painted the house again. I absolutely hate painting. Just last year she decided to change the color or our exterior trim. I hired a contractor. They can do in 2-3 days what would probably take me about 1.5-2 weeks.

+1 for hiring a pro!  I mean professional and not simply paying a person to do the job.  They will do a much better and quicker job.  A pro will also discuss your color ideas prior to painting which will reduce chances of spousal protest.  If you decide to DIY, include your wife in the project.   My wife has different skills than me but we both take ownership on good or bad decisions.  Spousal protest is greatly reduced when "we" did it!
