Truck is a 19 Silverado 6.2L 10-Speed 4wd.

Took it into a dealer for my 45k maintenance, cause quite frankly, its too cold outside.  Already done everything but the transmission fluid/filter change.  Need to drop the exhaust just to drop the pan; PITA.

Dealer said I don't need to do the filter, and just needed to do the fluid.  The proceeded to quote me $639 at a $185/hr rate.  2.5 hours to just drain and refill sounds like a rip off, but I digress.

My issue isn't with the price, its with them stating I don't need to do the filter, when the manufacturer says to do it at 45k.  Any suggestions?  I already did the transfer case, and they said that was not needed until 60k.

Obviously I walked out and decided I will be doing it myself.  But do I need to do the filter or not?

Always advocate dropping the pan to check for any foreign objects and to service the filter.  If the fluid looks normal on the dipstick then simply dumping the pan is good enough.

Up to you.

I would do it because the break in of the trans causes wear particles.

Case in point, our Hyundai has a magnet on the trans drain plug. I did a drain and fill at 30k, magnet had quite a lot of stuff on it.

I did another drain and fill at 31k miles, magnet was clean.

Like always I relate my experiences nothing else. Honda Odyssey 156k one complete drain and fill. Had a partial at the dealership one drop and fill at 100K miles. The complete by me at 127K. It took 3 drain and fills over several days. 4Qts at a time. Hyundai Genesis 142K. One at 60K, one at 130K. Drain and fill. Avalanche 2002 Z66. Only 1 at 156K by me. Pulled fluid through the dipstick over 3 days 3 times. The only time I ever changed a transmission filter was on my 1970  Grand Prix and my 1974 Nova. I was putting in a B&M shift kit. So naturally I changed the filter. I always believe and maybe times have changed. If the transmission filter is clogged, the transmission is toast.

The 10 speed doesn't have a dipstick.

I would wait until it warms up and do it yourself. I would be willing to bet if you pull the transmission mount screws you can jack the tailshaft up high enough to get the pan clear. Install a drain plug or a pan with a drain plug, do your filter this time for reasons covered by @calgator73 and then at 90k just do a spill and fill. https://transpartswarehouse.com/k032-transmission-drain-plug-kit-made-in-the-u-s-a-universal-ford-gm-superior.html?network=g&device=c&keyword=&campaign=1656107452&adgroup=pla-297808671781&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiApNW6BhD5ARIsACmEbkXSMFXz4i4Sb9Mil9fCtGsomKx26XuBUXBDq_bemKxF0q3PDIipzNkaAk76EALw_wcB

This is a hot topic with the transmission folks.  I have never liked transmission flushes and have always dropped the pan and replaced the filter.  Many shops have been caught charging the people for a trans flush and doing nothing.  My faith in all dealers is gone.  In our owners manual, it says 45K for sever duty.  I plan to change my 2020 at around 50K or so but will not sweat pushing it up a bit.  Unless you were hauling the max towing, I would recommend not changing it at the 45K miles.  There are way too many horror stories of trans flushes causing all kind of issues with these 10 speed transmissions.  I already bought the filter, gasket and oil but like you, I am waiting for warmer weather to do it.  I removed the crushed cross over exhaust pipe and had a muffler shop weld in a true round pipe when it was new but did not plan ahead.  Now I am looking to design cross over pipe with flanges at the cats to make removing the pan a whole lot easier.  Getting up to the manifold nuts and removing the oxygen sensors is not a really fun job.

You don't have to drop the exhaust, a prybar and patience will do.  Many Youtube Videos

For refilling the trans you can buy a hose nipple that threads into the fill hole on the side of the trans. I dont know the size on the other trucks but the 10spd on the 2500/3500's is M18. They are available on Amazon with a nipple for 1/2" hose. I attach the hose to it and run the hose up to where the dipstick should be. This way you can gravity fill the easy way.
