What my rework will look like is a down turn about half way between the last hanger point & the sstock outlet. It will also be pointing outboard as well.

 

The 'tamer' was previously used on my 2017 that had a similar 'outlet'.

Its weird how the photo at the first angle almost made it look like the exhaust was shooting partly over top of the square tubing, optical illusion. I imagine the flap gets on the warm side but must be far enough away that its not being affected. Mind you I wonder how far back they bend when travelling at highway speed without the steel rod stiffeners that some highway tractors will use ( mostly in front of the drives though for the obvious reason ! ). Perhaps one day you might have to splurge on a set of Peeeterrrrbilt flaps 😁.

 

Obviously the setup works well and would not have some stupid price attached to it that I can well imagine some of these hitch flap kits on the market would have. All I know is my friend was not happy when he melted his nylon string type sweeper and bought the rubber flap style to replace it with, then ended up modifying his tail pipe system anyway. For the fun of it I looked up what a Rock Tamer unit is priced at and Canadian Tire pops up ... 410.00 !

Pontiac was decently popular around here, and still see them around. Some of my favorite cars were made by them. Was sad when gm put the final nail in their coffin

 

 

Yep that would be me on DooTalk. I’m mostly on the Ontario section. I was a mod on OC a lot but went into exile a couple of years ago & had my modding privileges removed… How long of a drive is it from there to Tug Hill?

And as to the Chevy starting, if an engine is left for a couple of days in consistent cold like that to really cold soak the oil and lets say its 10W-30 conventional oil, its not going to produce any oil pressure for wayyyy too long of a time.  I did a RAP (Round Algonquin Park) Tour in ’96 that approached -40. On a trip in 2010 north of Sudbury, the Yamaha Apex in our group needed the heat gun trick towards relays to get started. The temp that day was in the mid -30s.

That's the ****** when a person is locked into a certain time frame for doing anything away from a work schedule that ties one down and don't have numerous days off in a row like some types of days on/days off employment.

 

Don't imagine your dad had a winter front on the truck or cardboard etc as that sure helps in the stupid cold temps. Speaking of that, I suspect your new truck will not come with grill shutters as I think its a theme that if the snow plow prep is added then they don't put the shutters on. I had no idea if mine would come with shutters or not until the truck arrived and it does have them as I ordered it with the stock torsion bars. I haven't had it in any considered cold weather, doubt its been cold enough to even run the block heater as they set them up so they supposedly don't come on until its near zero F. Never the less if its something below the freezing point, I am amazed at how the temp climbs up just sitting there idling and yes the shutters are closed when its doing that and actually even once up to a stabilized engine temp the shutters are still closed. Its all good until the time the shutters crap out and stay closed when its pulling or hot out !

 

That friends 2023 1/2 ton with the 6.2, not sure if its because of the engine or that it has the max tow package but it does not have shutters. Yet his 2017 1/2 ton with the 5.3 did have shutters. Ironically his older truck was not good at warming up quick in the winter when heading to or from work but his new one is noticeably better, no idea why that is.

 

 

Do Ford or Dodge have the thermostatically controlled block heaters on their trucks? I haven’t really had any need to plug my truck in since I retired. Except for maybe one winter when I was dealing w/ battery issues…

i know this truck will take longer to heat up with having the cast iron block over the alum block, but I don’t daily my truck in the winter, so the heated seat will work enough till the engine temp gets up.

Fun fact, at the dealership I bought a second cord to plug the truck in that I can pack in the truck at all times and leave the one I use at home just laying there, the partsman said these cords are a hot item as they sell lots of them because ... idiots steal them where the vehicle is accessible to the public and plugged in. Come out to your vehicle and its not plugged in and your adapter cord is missing, apparently its sadly too common an occurrence. The cord is around 120.00 I believe, you won't have to worry about yours getting stolen LOL.

As to locking out the upper portion of the tailgate, I believe its about seven seconds that one has to hold the upper button and then the taillights flash and that button is disabled when pressed momentarily and you can test that after you do the disable. To undo it, its holding it again for that seven seconds and it reverts back to being functional. You have to have the key fob on you when doing that, if the engine is not running anyway. Its very easy to find videos of guys that are showing damage they caused to their tailgate because they were not thinking and pressed the upper button and the whole unit came unfolded onto their hitch ball or the hitch of the trailer they have hooked up. Its easy to avoid that if operated properly or lock it out so someone else is with you and don't understand which button not to press to avoid damage.

It has the many little rubber bumps under it to in theory help a bit of air flow under it to dry out if moisture gets under it. Yes it takes up a bit of height under the cover but I find spray in box liners to be insanely hard on the knees to crawl around in as this is way more comfortable but does leave that transition edge at the back of the box. Its also more grippy to keep some things from sliding around as bad and if I ever set something onto it that cuts into it for some reason, I won't feel so bad vs damaging the spray in liner. I am used to having a plywood box liner that is tough and table top flat vs the uneven shape of formed channels in steel boxes. To pack some tools and tow ropes, hitch balls etc etc I figured this time I would try fairly tall totes with lids as that way I can be sure the tools and supplies won't get wet and sit and rust even if the cover didn't hold out water 100% or dust for that matter as no doubt dust will get in.

 

 

 I had 2 Bak Flip hard tri-folds on previous trucks. I wasn’t impressed w/ them when I tried to replace a couple of broken latches & how the ‘cable covers’ started to warp. They would not stay in place.

The spray in liner is good enough for me also and usually stops stuff from completely flying to the front of the bed when I stop, I have had bed mats in previous trucks that weren’t spray linered which was ok, but also let a bunch of dust and crap accumulate over time. This I’ll just take a hose every now and again and blast the bed out and leave the tailgate down in the driveway and let it dry out

My brother used to have a roll top on his Ford but the assembly took up room below the bed line in the front but it was a total pain if it got iced up or wet from washing the truck in the winter and then sitting outside with no heated garage. Also it had major issues with dust and water getting into it and it was wrecking items he had in the box and they were not cheap compared to other covers at the time on the market. So he sold that cheap and bought a bakflip and has really liked it so that is what steered me that way. I also wanted something that could withstand some snow load on it and not sure how a soft cover fairs for that type of situation. A shell would have its good points for hauling taller items but unless I really need to do that I passed on it for now as that eliminates looking out a rear view mirror and isn't nice to be in traffic or parking lots with that more limited view.

 

They really went backwards with the High Country with its standard floor mats, in fact it was impossible to order the truck with the weathertec mats unless it was the package of mats, the full size under seat storage box which I bought in the end and the console mounted safe. While the safe would have been ok to have had, that really limited the amount of space in the console so I passed on that option. I am not sure if the factory mats would have been the same as the ones I bought over the counter, the front ones could have been but the rear ones I got the idea would be something a bit different and so at parts they said the matching rear mats are not offered by Chev, only GMC so they stocked the rear mats from GM so customers could match their front mats ... what a confusing mess that is and no idea why Chev is doing something different then GM. Long and short is I got what I was after and passed on getting the Z71 front mats as they have the deep groves and collect a bunch of crap and are harder to clean if one wants to do a wipe down off the mats as they sit in the vehicle.

 

Its good your getting mud flaps, anything is better than not having something to keep the crap from hitting the truck. I think I know what flaps you are getting, they are relatively thin and light and are shaped to fit the factory wheel well extender if you will. What I have does protect more in the sense that they are lower which may or may not be so good at some point but seem quite popular around here as the gravel roads are far greater than the few main paved roads we have. Oh yes and the LT does not come with rear wheel well liners unless its specifically optioned, the HC thankfully comes with them ... and the price tag !

 

I think I had made a comment somewhere else on this forum about another item other than finding some fluid levels low, I had checked the wheel lug nut torque when I got the truck home and was surprised that they were certainly not up to the 140 foot pounds but more around 100 it seemed. So something to check out when you get it in your hands as its no different then going home from a tire shop and checking the torque and finding they settled in and loosened up some or also as per tire shops all sorts of human error of missing to tighten lug nuts ( I doubt the factory has that issue with the automated power head they use to tighten all the lugs at once ).

 

 

 

I hear you on the old 1 piece ‘lids’ If you have anything taller than the box side, it’s difficult to restrain the lid. I recall seeing a vehicle w/ a kid’s playground set in the back. The lid was sticking up in the air @ a 45* angle.

 

About factory mud flaps, what do the GM accessory pieces look like on the Chev T1XX trucks? I have the smallish ones that the truck came w/. On my 2017 (K2XX), I did have them add the accessory flaps before I picked it up.

I imagine if I ran the exhaust stock this summer towing the TT, the rubber would likely be euchred. I have seen those stiffeners too. I've also seen flaps that seem to be a much less flexible material.

To follow up your comments, I honestly don't know what Ford and Ram have done with their block heater systems and have only "assumed" they did something retarded like GM did to save the planet from itself. Of course its harder on the engine when its still quite cold and yet the block heater would not have activated and the engine would be in open loop longer using a richer mixture and more fuel dilution into the oil and more potential for sludge build up if doing a lot of short runs. Assuming if it is the cord end that has the temp control in it, I'd like to cut it off but then I gather the engine check light could come on because it senses someones being too nice to the engine !

 

I've certainly wondered about some of the components of the bakflip or others similar, the rubber that has to fold over 180 degrees to open it up, and like you said the rather mickey mouse latches. Just hoping that since they have been around for years I can get parts for it or I may be in for a rude awakening.

 

Yes my old single piece cover, one always has to be aware of the direction of wind before opening it if there is a stiff wind. I have heard of people having that theme of cover fly up and hit the end of the shock stroke and rip out the mounts and come flipping over and smash the cab in the process of self destructing, now that would be one bad day !.

 

GM had quite a list of accessory mud flaps, some are the really stupid expensive gator back brand units that would be made very similar to my Bullet Proof brand ones, and then a variety of other smaller thick rubber ones and then that thin plastic conformed one that blends in with the existing wheel well flap extension as they call it ( possibly would only work with the standard length factory piece, not the optional longer ones ). And that is where with the flaps I had bought and talked to the company in Red Deer, that the flaps I wanted from them were made for the regular length GM extension, not the longer ones.

 

I forgot about you having used a 45 degree tip, of course that would change the direction of heat. The rubber mud flaps, they come in various weights for sure depending on brand and then there are the more rigid plastic ones and I have a set of those on one of my Petes because of the hanger style that is designed around using that type and will say with the rocks that hit those flaps pouring off the rear duals, its literally curled the outer edge back and looks stupid. Something about the material can't take the pounding of much gravel. And I don't know as far as rocks bouncing off of flaps, have to take that into consideration as a ridgid flap may direct rocks back at the truck, its always something that one finds out after the damage is done !. 

 

Here is a photo of a rear flap on my pickup, this flap kit of 4 was designed for a stock truck with stock wheels and tires as it would not cover enough for a wider tire or be off set for an aftermarket wheel and these have pre punched holes for mounting onto a Chev HD ( ( GM is a different part ) so there is no guess work although I didn't bolt them on due to the crap roads and wanted them on before I hit the road. The rear ones have a longer flap and hang down plenty low and they did that so one could cut them back if desired. Standing from the back of the truck and doing a line of sight from the exposed tire at the ground to bottom of flap and its way below the bottom of the bumper. That is the problem with some shorty flaps, they don't reach down far enough and the bumper gets it and painted bumpers ... never was a fan of them and here I own a truck with them now.

Tug hill is about 3-3 1/2 hrs one way depending on the weather and how much of a hurry I’m in. I tend to stay on the north side of the hill in lowville there’s a nice motel right on the trail and right on one of the main roads. 
 

if I’m riding locally. I usually go to the byrncliff golf course and unload there at the groomer barn, very rarely do I ride up my way as there’s rarely snow worth trashing my sleds on. 
 

basil is “ok” on service. The sales side I hate, lots of Tom foolery, I’m getting my truck out of west herr of Hamburg on Saturday (got all my loan stuff and insurance set, I just don’t have time to grab it till the weekend, and the sales guy is off Friday)

 

i use to work in Lancaster, but I’m about 3 miles from Lake Ontario in a tiny town (Newfane)

My trailer flaps I mount to the hitch are the “rock tamers” brand, and have had them since 2010/2011, they have been used across many trucks and likely at some point I’ll have to get a new set as age and modifications are adding up. I’m hoping the exhaust doesn’t wreck them, I got away with the rear exit on my current trail boss luckily, even in 100f weather pulling in hills, but it’ll be interesting to see how this works, when I had my 2012 Chevy 3500, I actually cut the exhaust on the truck and put a turn out to blow it out behind the rear tire. I’d prefer to not to that this time around though.

Those are sharp pickups with the red and black. Its easy to tell it does not have the shutters which follows that theme it seems of the snow plow prep. Oh and just donned on me that they would bring them all in with front license plate brackets which few have here as we only require a rear plate.

New York State is deyocks about having two plates, they won’t think twice about writing out a ticket for only having a rear plate on a vehicle

Isn't that ridiculous, why 19 states do just fine running one plate and the rest have some issue with one plate, yet the states that have one plate are fine to cross through states that have two plates. The number of provinces/territories in Canada are higher that only require the single plate but you happen to live across from a province that does demand two plates. Politics and logic, it seems hard pressed ever get the two to come together to agree on a common logical agreement.

 

I still wish I had gotten the K03 tires, Chev made it totally unclear as to what the optional tire was and the sales guy claimed for sure it was some off road mud tire ... nope, it was indeed the KO3 of the very same size as your trim comes with as a package.

 

Does that sound right that I think your truck came with the optional longer splash guards by the looks in the photo, I think. Not sure if there are some add on flaps that also work with those as I imagine so , all I know is my aftermarket flaps I bought were designed around the standard length splash guard extensions.

I bought the mud flaps with the points I had from buying the truck, the shorty ones that are stock don’t stop much, and the aftermarket don’t look the best, these at least use the factory mount holes and look decent (the half ton trucks oe ones look dumb, it’s weird how it’s the same base body shape and they don’t look similar)

 

another pet peeve of mine is the registration and inspection junk we have to put in the window also. It’s modern times we don’t need the stupid stickers in the windows

I was thinking of traditional mud flaps when you mentioned putting some on, now I see what you were speaking of. What I had seen a bit ago at the dealership on a trail boss that was sitting in the show room were the thin plastic molded units that looked very much like they could have been weathertech but might be GM's answer to that. They were fitted to a truck that came with the standard length splash guards like what your truck had come with from the factory. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of them but thought for some coverage and looking like they were made to be there, that they were a viable option.

 

That safety inspection sticker theme in Alberta is for commercially licensed trucks, nothing is required for a personal vehicle. We don't have annual personal vehicle inspections, only an inspection if buying a used vehicle over I think its 10 years old or if the vehicle is bought out of province no matter how new it was, it requires a one time inspection to licence it in the new province.

 

Do those stickers go on the outside or inside of your glass, inside would really suck if you have tint film on your side windows. Actually its supposed to be illegal in Alberta to have tint on front side windows ( and certainly on the windshield ) but aftermarket companies make their money putting PPF on and window tint. I decided to get some 35 % tint on my drivers/passenger window that isn't insanely dark and hope I don't have an issue with that. I imagine that probably varies from state to state too ?

We don't have annual personal vehicle inspections, only an inspection if buying a used vehicle over I think its 10 years old or if the vehicle is bought out of province no matter how new it was, it requires a one time inspection to licence it in the new province.

 

Do those stickers go on the outside or inside of your glass, inside would really suck if you have tint film on your side windows. Actually its supposed to be illegal in Alberta to have tint on front side windows ( and certainly on the windshield ) but aftermarket companies make their money putting PPF on and window tint. I decided to get some 35 % tint on my drivers/passenger window that isn't insanely dark and hope I don't have an issue with that. I imagine that probably varies from state to state too ?

Inside the windshield, which makes it fun to replace the reg every 2 years, and the inspections are yearly here. And don’t even think about tinting windows in the PRNY, that’s a huge no-no… I hate this state
