Hey everyone, we noticed this question comes up a lot, so we finally put together one master cheat sheet. It covers the exact oil capacity, filter numbers, and drain plug torques for every GM truck and SUV from 2016 through 2026. Bookmark the full guide here so you never have to guess again: https://www.gm-trucks.com/gm-engine-oil-capacity-guide/

On my 22 duramax, it takes almost 11 qts. I inquired on another forum, there was a few that said their duramax takes more than 10 qts.

I recently changed the oil in my new 2025 L5P Duramax along with a new PF63 filter. It took 11 qts to get the dipstick to read at the top of the full mark. I thought this was a 10 qt engine ? Could it be that the pan was revised for a more thorough drain ? Banks has been making a big deal out of the pan not draining completely.

Anyone else notice this ?

Did you check the level after the had been run and then sat overnight (or at least for a few hours)

Dmax is notorious for taking a long time to drain down.

Yes, I checked it a number of times including the next morning and it was still low until I added another qt. I guess I will know for sure in the spring when I change it again.

When I have time I let mine drain for well over an hour, easily takes 10.5-11 qts.

Call me crazy, but it sure seems my 2025 takes more oil than my 2020 did.  Just did my 3rd oil change on this truck and it took 11 quarts, but I always remember 10 on the 2020.  I let it drain 10-15 minutes, but not more usually.

10 quarts (2.5 gallon jug) fills my 2024 L5P just fine. Shows about 3/4 up the hash marks on the dipstick after filling and sitting for 30 minus or so. Don't overthink it. The fill capacity is 10 quarts.

2.5 gallon jugs are nice, just have to be careful when putting it in. Not the lightest thing to handle.

Yea, and the hood scoop thingy on the driver side is positioned DIRECTLY over the fricken oil fill tube. I have to remove it every time and clean it out so debris doesn't fall into the tube. I have a funnel that twists into place on the fill tube tho making the fill a little easier, but it's always a little precarious filling up the oil with the 2.5g jugs while standing on a step stool leaning over the engine bay.

I like the CCV relocate kits on the market that also move the oil fill tube towards the front of the engine.
