Hi everyone,

I have a 2015 Silverado 1500 6.2L LTZ with ~150k miles. Recently I've had this weird electrical gremlin pop up that I'm hoping some of you may be able to help me track down.

The problem occurs on initial startup of the truck, when I'm shifting out of park, the following gauge cluster/DIC oddities occur:

  • The red shift indicator sometimes disappears or flashes momentarily as I pull the lever down to various positions.
  • One or more of the DIC messages below pop up in quick succession such as:
    • Tire Monitor System
    • Trailer Brake System
    • Theft Deterrent System
    • Park Assist Off
    • Stabilitrak
  • All gauge needles will briefly go all the way to the left, and then immediately return to normal.

This is only temporary, and I must stress, none of the systems outlined above seem to actually be defective. The truck, engine, transmission, etc. run perfectly fine. This is the only issue that occurs. Even when the red shift indicator disappears/flashes momentarily, the truck is actually shifting through the gears. None of these gauge issues or alerts ever crop up while driving, this only occurs after starting the truck and initially shifting into reverse or drive to leave the house/work.

I had my Duralast Platinum battery replaced at Autozone under warranty last week to rule out any weird battery issue as it was nearing the three-year mark since I bought it. I cleaned the connector clamps thoroughly before installing the new battery.

Oddly, the problem seems to occur more predictably when it is hot out (Houston, TX here). There have been a number of mornings where when I am backing out of the garage, it doesn't occur (not every single time, but a lot). Then later in the day when I'm parked out in the sun at work and go to lunch it almost always crops up.

To me it sounds like some sort of grounding/resistance problem. I have crawled under the truck and found two grounds on the frame, one on the driver side and one on the passenger side; removed those and cleaned them thoroughly and bolted them back down tight. I've also read about and watched a couple of YouTube videos regarding the ground in the cab, under the dash by the A pillar next to the driver side speaker near the windshield. I haven't had the time to get to this one yet, but it is probably going to be my next stop. Apparently sound deadening insulation can be trapped between the ground and the metal it is bolted to, causing high resistance and weird electrical issues. However, it seems like this is something that occurs at the factory, and in my mind it's a bit weird I've never had any other weird electrical gremlin like this until very recently with this problem so I'm not convinced this is the culprit.

Any suggestions on where to look or what to do next?

It does sound like a bad/weak ground. Before I'd do anything else, do check tge ground by the A pillar. It is a known issue for this problem.

Here's a video I found in case you haven't found one.

Thank you for the response. That guy is one of the videos I watched along with this other one below from another guy on YouTube called Tony Lester. I also watched the video at the bottom of this post from Dustin T where he goes into a bit more detail about the symptoms he was experiencing.

These guys symptoms are somewhat similar to mine, apart from theirs also seems to occur when they are driving which mine doesn't fortunately. Also, fortunately I have not had the wheel jerkiness described by Tony at the end of his video.

After doing a little more research, it looks like there is also a grounding point under the truck near the starter that I'm also going to take off and clean thoroughly. My initial thoughts were that it was some exposed ground that had gotten filthy and grimy and was causing these intermittent issues.

Either today or tomorrow I plan on cleaning both of these grounding points up (by the starter and the one next to the speaker) and will report back my findings.

Has the head been off fir work? The ground on the back of the driver's side head can cause some of those messages.

Nope, never been removed. I'll inspect this grounding point as well though for peace of mind when I get around to it. Is it easily accessible, or does anything need to be removed to get to it?

Take a look at this video as well. It talks about a braided strap ground that just corrodes away and this guy replaced it with a thicker gauge insulated wire to fix it. Although not quite the same symptoms you have, I believe you are on the right track by checking all the grounds.

    • Whoever greenlighted the work truck matte black front bumpers on every trim but the AT4X should be fired!  I was hoping that was an AI mistake, but just realized they were on every model of the 2027 Silverado too.     Some parts of the interior do look premium, but the Denali Ultimate dashboard looks like an afterthought.  At least they appear to have lost the microfiber the high end Silverado models showed, but the '27 High Country dash looks better than the Denali.
    • New member here. I am researching a read-first event-recorder concept for late-model GM V8 trucks. This is not a sales post. There is no product link, price, preorder, or mailing list. I am trying to determine whether the underlying problem is real before building anything.   Has your truck ever had a brief problem such as: - rough running or a momentary misfire - an oil-pressure warning or unusual pressure event - reduced power or a brief stall - a U-code or lost-communication problem - a symptom that disappeared before the dealer or independent shop could reproduce it   If so, I would appreciate the following details: - year, model, engine, and mileage - what happened and under what conditions - whether a DTC and useful freeze-frame data were stored - whether the shop was able to reproduce it - what the eventual confirmed repair was, if known - what additional information would have helped the diagnosis   The concept being evaluated is a removable leave-in recorder that continuously retains a rolling window from before and after an event. It would not tune, reflash, clear codes, or change the vehicle calibration.   I am also not claiming that it could predict lifter failure or see every internal ECM variable.   The real question is whether continuous event history would add enough useful evidence beyond freeze frame, GDS2, and existing scan tools — or whether it would simply be another unnecessary gadget.   For owners and technicians, which problem would make something like this genuinely useful: 1. intermittent misfire or AFM/DFM-related behavior 2. oil-pressure events 3. lost communication or electrical faults 4. none of the above Please be blunt. Negative feedback is just as useful as positive feedback.
    • No tears over the SLE and SLT trim levels disappearing but I kind of loathe the "Elevation" name. It's a truck--skip the elegance.   The slab-dashboard design is decidedly different. Almost has a Hummer flavor to it. "Professional Grade" seems to be leaning very white-collar, tech-driven these days moreso than blue-collar, functional design.   The Silverado would be my choice between the two new trucks. Pleased with the engine lineup in both. The GMC is a little "too much" for a truck, IMO, and the Denali borders on ridiculous - but I do know there are buyers for luxury trucks out there. It's just not my speed.

    • - I like the outside but not as much as the Chevrolet.  They ICE'd the EV styling and it works, but I think exterior goes to Chevy on this one.     - SLE and SLT dead = Not.  Surprising.  Fits into the rest of the GMC lineup like this which (aside from Pro) matches the rest of the family.  Elevation, AT4, Denali.     - Interior.  Sophisticated Malaise era.  Why do I say Malaise?  Drawn with a ruler.  Rectangles everywhere.  Looks very premium though.
