It's official. Chevy pulled the covers off the next-gen 2027 Silverado 1500, and we got the first official look.

The quick hits:

  • LT is dead. The new core trim is just called "Silverado."
  • Two new V8s, a 5.7L and a 6.6L. No horsepower or torque numbers yet.
  • The 2.7 TurboMax finally gets the 10-speed.
  • ZR2 moves to standard 35s with front and rear lockers.
  • Over 60 inches of dash display on ZR2 and High Country, passenger screen included.
  • Seven trims, three lifted from the factory: ZR2, Trail Boss, and a new Custom Trail Boss.

 

So let's get into it:

  • 5.7 and 6.6 instead of holding out for a 6.7. Right call?
  • Killing the LT name after all these years: bold, or a mistake?
  • Does the new look land for you, or is it too safe?
  • No power numbers at reveal. Smart tease, or frustrating?

Why soooooo many screens? Shall we just replace the windshield with a large plasma?!?!? Besides that I like the looks. And they added back the additional door cubbies,

Im a fan.  Simply moving the screen up helps the look of the interior.  I feel like GM dropped the ball on the current gen having the screen not at the same level as the top of the gauge cluster.  The GMCs look better with the vents above the screen to close that gap.

I'm also waiting to see if they confirm Apple CarPlay, because I'm not interested in subscription fees just to use the hardware I already purchased. 

 

In closeups it looks like it gets the Colorado/Canyon center screen based headlight controls which I despise. They also appear to lose all the hard switches for functions like seat heating and cooling, parking sensors, lane control, traction control, etc. which means they're all screen/menu based, so verdict is out on how well those will work with gloves or wet/dirty hands.  Admittedly they don't show the left knee area of the dash, but I don't see hard switches for locker control on the ZR2, and the "mode" switch appears to eliminate the rotary dial with a quick way to access tow/haul.  My 2021 has had multiple screen failures and at times the screen just locks up, goes black, or reboots while driving even after replacement, so loosing the ability to access many of these functions, especially lighting control would be pretty frustrating.

 

There aren't enough photos or detailed trim details other than one mention of "available microfiber trim" to confirm, but the use of microfiber on the seats and or center console is a deal killer for me.  Just because you drive a ZR2 or High Country, doesn't mean you don't work out of it, and that material is difficult at best to keep clean and looking decent.   Lexus and several other brands are using it on seats, dash, and door panels now, I assume as a cost and weight saving measure,  and it looks horrible 1-2 years into ownership.  I see what appears to be piano black on the doors and center console in some photos, which also has no place in ANY vehicle in my opinion because it mars and scratches too easily, especially for a truck.  Will be interesting to see what GMC comes out with when the Sierra is released as far as materials go.

I like it.

 

In a world of vehicle front ends that look like they've had a little too much nipping and tucking, I appreciate that GM went with a bold and professional look for the new Silverado and kept the aggression understated. The new 1500 looks a little more like the current 2500.

 

The interior looks well done as usual, although I'm not a fan of billboard screens on the dash. At least recess the gauge cluster screen. I see passenger screens as "keeping up with the Joneses'" in automotive interiors of late, which is fine. I don't think they belong in most pickups, but choice is good. Maybe some day I'll appreciate having one. Probably not, but, maybe.

 

Yet another steering wheel and airbag design. I wonder what it costs to have so many different models of airbags and buttons and steering wheel frames. IMO, pick a good one and stick with it. The new one is very...luxurious...looking. Again, not bad, but also not what I'd expect in a pickup.

 

GM has left us awaiting engine choice announcements and official details.

 

 

What will I be ordering on day one?

 

Nothing. I like my 2025 and it would be silly to get rid of it just to have a 2027.

- The Silverado "Silverado" makes no sense.  Perhaps they should have picked another old name like "Scottsdale" or "Cheyenne"?  They roll off the tongue a LOT better.  "Silverado Sottsdale" or "Silverado Cheyenne".  Or just bring back "LT".

 

- Because of the "LT" drop, now Trail Boss sounds stupid.  Custom Trail Boss, and then the higher version is "Trail Boss".  Like...WTF.  

 

- 6.6.  This was a debated topic for sure but I was camp 6.6 months ago.  Made sense to me.

 

- I want to know the power #s more than anything else at this moment.  I get they are calibrating and validating, but those are probably the most important thing they've held back.  Moreso than towing #s.  2.7 and 5.7 are the most interesting to me for the numbers.  The 6.6 will be close to if not just over 500hp, that's a given at this point.    

 

- Looks.  Definitely improved, slightly safe up front?  Its a blend of Tahoe and Silverado HD.  Its not full Tahoe or HD though, making it unique.  Interior wise, I loved the 2022.5-2026 upgrade to Silverado but this is a nice integration of those new larger screens they are using, and it's not a direct copy of the Tahoe/Suburban.  Seeing one in person or live video in the meantime will be important to get a better feel of the looks.  

 

- Biggest flaw?  4x4 switches.  WHY are they UNDER the HVAC in the center stack?!?!?!?!  

 

- Biggest glow up over last gen so far to me?  High Country.  That two tone interior they showed is just fantastic.  The new badging/font choice really classes it up as well.  It's Denali levels of good for Chevrolet.

Car and Driver is reporting wireless CarPlay WILL remain, and they posted several additional photos, including a left knee shot, but the only hard buttons there are e-brake, auto start stop, tailgate and cargo light.  Also definitely looks like High Country and ZR2 get micro fiber on the center of the console lid and the ZR2 possibly also on the seats.

I always thought "Silverado LT Z71 Trail Boss" amounted to word salad, as well as "Custom Trail Boss". LT didn't really mean much since the disappearance of LS trim, and Z71 doesn't mean much either.

 

I bought my TB for the appearance. The name is kind of goofy to me anyway. The trucks are more of a Mall Boss if I'm being honest.

 

Naming conventions aside, I think the lineup is good for '27.

If I may, I'd like to post my prediction of the trim levels for the 2027 GMC Sierra, based on what was released/introduced today about the Chevy Silverado.

 

Using the "Professional Grade" wording already in use by GMC, here are the eight (8) trims I believe the Sierra will offer (comparable Chevy trim in parenthesis):

  • Sierra Pro (Work Truck/WT)
  • Elevation (Custom)
  • Elevation Premium -or- Ultimate (Silverado)
  • AT4 (Custom Trail Boss)
  • AT4 Premium -or- Ultimate (Trail Boss)
  • AT4X (ZR2)
  • Denali (High Country)
  • Denali Ultimate (N/A)

If GMC would rather simplify the trim levels, then I predict six (6) with package upgrades in parenthesis:

  • Sierra Pro (with a Graphite package upgrade option)
  • Elevation (with a Premium -or- Ultimate package upgrade)
  • AT4 (with a Premium -or- Ultimate package upgrade)
  • AT4X (with AEV and Ultimate packages upgrade)
  • Denali
  • Denali Ultimate 

Let's see if I'm close.

I'd be OK if SLT disappeared. Mind hits the gutter same as when I see TRD plastered on the side of a Toyota.

will there be a Glove Box light for 2027? Has any designer / Engineer actually sat in the trucks in total darkness with only the interior light on? Hope so. Cause it is very clear they did not for the last generation. (2022.5 - 2026) Those years are so dark inside.
