5 years 100K mile warranty on all 07's

WOW,

GM announces a 5 year 100K mile powertrain warranty on all 2007 models.

GM is making a statement on there quality. This could hurt them in the long run unless that are that confident in there products.

I am curious if this is retroactive to all 2007's models sold prior to the announcement yesterday.

Would make me think about sticking with GM for my next vehicle. It will be interesting to see who follows them.

Same thing that Chrysler did years ago to try and regain customers, it worked for them.

As much as that extended powertrain warrenty is nice, what about the rest of the vechicle ?

So far, repairs to my truck (which have not been that many thank-fully) have not been with the power-train.

fuel-sending unit (don't remember how much this part cost),

light switch ($400 just for the part)

couple of other items I don't recall.

Each of these covered under my after-market warrenty, not power-train related.

But I guess something is better than nothing. I'd still consider an extended warrenty for the rest of the vechicle.

My two cents....

As much as that extended powertrain warrenty is nice, what about the rest of the vechicle ?

I think this goes to show that the General KNOWS that they build a good vehicle. I do wonder what this will do to the prices of the GM extended warranties.

Not really.... GM has already proven they have excellent powertrains. There are a lot of gripes and nit picky things about people's truck on here, but how many REAL FAILURES have there been? I can gaurantee you GM ran the numbers on vehilces that needed an engine or tranny REPLACED under warranty and I'm sure the # was low enough for them to say, yeah, sure, we can do a 5 yr 100K mile warranty on powertrain.

The other thing you have to realize that this warranty will only cover FAILURES of parts. You motor can be knockin all to hell, but if it still runs/drives and doesn't throw a code it will be considered "normal" or "ok". Same thing with the trannys, only replaced under failure, not random slipping or weird shifts.

GM knows how to make money and sell cars. They've done it before and they'll do it again. Toyota was expected to surpass the General this year in sales, but so far toyotas share remains around 15% and GM's has varied from 21-24% of US sales. 5% doesn't sound like a lot, but that sure is A LOT of corollas and camrys to sell! I'm sure toyota will match this offer soon (as will other mfgs) but toyotas recent sales surge WILL taper off. Their car's are supposed to last forever, right?

warranty's are as much a marketing tool as any other tool any manufacturer uses to sell vehicles.

most likely things to fail on vehicle aren't engine or tranny and owner still has to do preventice maintnence, so GM isn't taking a big chance anyway.

The only thing that extended warranty would make me feel good about would be the 4L60 transmission if I was doing a lot of towing with the truck. I assume they also cover the rear and front axle?

That's A REAL good question.... and along the same lines, I would assume a transfer case and front axle on a 4x4?

Nah, just being a smart ass. I KNOW toyota makes good cars, but so does GM, but most people and organizations (such as CR) has given them a "god-like" end all status and it pisses me off

Axles (to include boots) are covered. There is a whole section on their homepage (www.gm.com) dedicated to dealing with the new warranty. I am so happy to see this happen, it's about time. As was mentioned in the previous post, this would make me a lot more comfortable with the 4L60 tranny. Wish my 2004 with 44,000 mi. was still covered. Piece of mind baby, that's what it's all about.

the warranty will cost a lot less than the rebates, which is what they are trying to get away from. If consumers find the warranty appealing enough that they will buy the vehicles with little or no warranty, GM succeeded. They already make great vehicles, so substituting $3000-5000 in cash for an extended warranty is a slam dunk. Besides, few put 100,000 miles in 5 years. This warranty is essentially the same as ford's 5/60, GM is just seeking more marketing kick with the 100k mile piece.
