im not sure im convinced in synthetic oil. ive used synthetic as soon as i could and now have 47k on my 03 8.1.. i get lousy fuel mileage anyway and wonder if synthetic has ever really made a difference at all. now that i think of it, i used synthetic in my vette, and motorycles also but never my wifes old car :lurk: , but her car still runs just fine with 130,000k.. i just bought her a brand new envoy and started with conventional. is there any real proof or documentation of one over the other?

Personally, I think that synthetic oil is a waste of money.

Using synthetic oil will not buy you any mpg gains. That's the wrong reason to use them. The real benefit to using synthetics is if you drive your engines very hard, or drive in very hot or very cold conditions. Here they shine. No comparrisons to dino oils. I have used several different brands of synthetics since 1983 in many types of vehicles, no mileage gain to speak of, but that is not why I use them. The climate I drive in ranges from +115F to -20F. No coking or boil off in tortuosuly hot conditions and the engines crank over far faster with synthetics when it's butt ugly cold out.

I never bought into the higher drain intervals all that much but I do keep them in everything I own and typically change them out at about 7,500-8,000 miles. They have served me well .

I think the reason most people use synthetics is to extend the oil change interval. I don't buy this. The additives still break down and the oil still gets dirty. For these reasons, I still advocate changing oil on short intervals. I was raised to change oil every 3000 miles and I never let it get more than 5000 miles. On the shorter intervals, the conventional oil is fine. This is the reason that I contend that synthetic oil is a waste of money.

I'd never dream of letting ANY oil go 8 or 10 thousand miles between changes.

would it be ok to switch back to conventional after almost 40k of synthetic since brand new?

Sure...... no worries.

I know several that switch back and forth between synthetic and regular oil on a regular basis, synthetic for winter and regular for summer. No issues at all.
