Transfer case update

I just got off the phone with the dealer.  After dissasembling my transfer case, they feel the problem is a block/synchronizer/slider.  They spoke with engineering on the phone, and GM engineering gave them a list of 5 parts to order.  They said there was a tremendous amount of slop in the synchro gear and block.

I think they are just taking a shot in the dark.  If it is the encoder motor/servo (Like Larry thinks) then it will still do it when they put it back together.  Maybe at that point they will order me a new transfer case!!!

Parts are being shipped overnight from Lansing and Philly, so I will be driving the F150 a few more days...  :but:

Shane,

Sorry to hear it's going to take longer and potentially, like you said, the dealer might not even get it right.

Now don't you go getting attached to that Ferd!  It's not good for you!  We have an 01 Windstar and I really don't like it.  It gets poor gas mileage, sloppy brakes, terrible in the snow, even with traction control, etc.

At least it has a vcr and monitor in it.

I posted a link in a message you posted to in aftermarket about side bars.  It appears Westin does make side bars for the CC, but they don't have any directions or photos on their website yet. :D

BTW - I'm sending you some pictures of the duals and the Westin CPS side bars I just put on.  The mounting kit just got here today, finally!!!

Yea Steve, it sounds like they are guessing.  they said there weren't enough parts involved in order to juts give me a new case.  They did have several specialty techs look it over though... so lets just wait and see... (I don't have any other choice actually).

My wifes Odessey has a DVD player in it and as long as my kids are young I'll never own another van without one.  We had VHS in our '00 Olds Silhouette.  It sure makes trips easier!!!

They make a reference to an optional "Upgraded Transfer Case" in on of the articles.

My dealer (small and local but sells mostly Hd's)  Has not had a T-case failure before mine.  He is working through GM tech now to try to figure this out...

I am bummed...   but i guess it is a blessing that you guys get to hear it from a moderator!!!!

my HD is doing a similar thing, I am a parts manager at a GMC/Pontiac store and my lead tech thinks it is in the front axle/diff assy. He is still checking with his "network". Mine would bang into 4wd and have a lot of extra rolling resistance while in 4wd, and have to have the front "unloaded" when coming out of 4wd to have the resistance go away.

I don't recall alot of extra rolling resistance with mine beyond what I would consider normal.  It would "bind-up" easier than I thought it would on just wet roads however...  Mine would disengage without any problems but when it engaged it definatly hit hard!!!

If it were to bind up, it tear apart the internals in the transfercase itself.  Which leads me to believe that if you feel resistance, it may be up front also.  There is supposed to be some "slack" in the transfer case so as to allow engagement and disengagement of the synchro's.  I guess the key is how much is too much.

I just got off the phone with the dealer.  They got all the parts... except one!!!  They are on a high priority list for this part and they have searched dealers nationwide and the only ones they have been able to locate are spoken for.  Once again I asked for a new T-case, and they said that it may be a good option.  They will know more tomorrow.

I mentioned the front diff. and they claimed that the GM tech engineer they talked too felt there was too much slop in the synchronizer (however they aren't totally convinced).  They said that it is a possabillity that the front diff is the problem, but they will redo the transfercase as per GM's request.  GM is interested in the results and the feeling I got from the dealership is that there may be a potential problem here (ie. lack of parts).

The other option they were talking about was to put my T-case back together and then give me my truck back until they could get another part.  I don't know if I care for that idea, but I can imagine that my crewcab has been taking up alot of space in their service bay for the past week!!!   LOL!!!

They asked me to call back tomorrow, but I may just stop by instead.  The dealer is only about 10 miles from my house, but other than to have my truck there I have no reason to go in that direction.
