Engine Hour Meter

So when I bought my silverado and familiarized myself with all of the new buttons and the manual I found that my 80, 000km mileage showed only 5.0Hrs on the meter when pressing and holding the trip button... The dealership put a new battery in the truck before I picked it up since it was the original and wasn't holding a charge very well. Is there anyway to recall the full hours from the trucks computer, according to GM they have no idea what I was talking about when I emailed them.... I did search this topic on the site, but didn't find anyone who had this issue. Not a big deal was just curious on the total engine hours if I can in fact bring it up somehow.

I have had the battery in my '05 disconnected for 1/2 a day before but the hour meter was not affected. Sounds kinda fishy to me, someone swap out the guage cluster?

The engine hours should be stored in the PCM or the Gauge Cluster. A simple power-loss event shouldn't be able to reset total engine hours...

Perhaps the previous owner put up with a non-working cluster which I've read about, and before resale the dealer put a new one in hence the 5.0 engine hours which I now have ?????

Seems feasible, but the km's are accurate?

At 16,000 km/h that seems about right!:) I don't want to race you! that's a fast truck

O.K. I have another thought... The first owner had two key FOBS and the truck was a commercial lease by a contracting supervisor. One FOB had a big 1 on the back and the other had a big 2 on the back and was not used. I'm waiting for the dealership to replace the 1 which was lost, so I've got the number 2 which was new and not used. So when I start up the truck it says driver # 2. Perhaps this is why I'm seeing only a few engine hours??

If a new cluster was put in they would only adjust the mileage (or kilometerage?) because it has to be accurate by law. The hours aren't really a priority when reprogramming a new cluster.

It's definitely not stored in the PCM as my engine hours were not affected after installing a new PCM with a wait4me tune.

Maybe the original owner drove the truck at an average speed of 16,000 km/hr? :tear:

Hate to bring up an old topic, but I have an issue where I bought my truck in January with 30100 miles and 930 hours and sometime in the end of February my hours reset back to zero but the miles are correct. Does the meter reset after 999 hours or did something happen with mine?

The miles and hours are ONLY kept in the cluster. There is a TSB on the hours suddenly going back to 0 but I don't know the number. Maybe someone with access to this will chime in.

Also like someone said the cluster could have been replaced and the mileage programed with out regard to hours.

I understand that the hours are only kept in the cluster itself, and maybe that is the answer.

There could be something wrong with the cluster itself, it has not happened since so I have no idea how to prove it to the dealer. The only thing I did when it happened was let it sit for 2 weeks while I was away on a business trip, when I left it was 900 something and when I came home it was reset.

If there was a way to prove it to the dealer I would take back asap to have it looked at as I only have 2K miles left on the warranty.

I think the fact that the number of miles vs the number of hours doesn't add up, should be proof enough something is wrong and that it reset itself. I mean if you only have 10 or 20 hours, just divide that by the miles. It should prove to be an impossible accomplishment.

For example, if you have 30,000 miles, and 20 hours on the meter, that would mean you had to travel at 1500 MPH.
