Gear Identification Help

I have a buddy with a 91 gmc,5 speed 1500.He is swapping the rearend do to it going out.The truck is not in his possesion at the moment but he has his vin number.Is theer a way to tell the gear size from the vin?He is trying to locate a rear with the same gear, but doesnt have access to his truck right now to pop the cover.

did you try looking at the codes in the glovebox? not sure if there are any on that year but there is on my 01

Should be able to get it from the dealership using the VIN.

 

If not I would say he'd be pretty safe putting a 373 in there, it was the most common gear set.
