Ethanol Station Opens In Los Angeles [ Only The Second In Cali--other

Yep...it's finally happened. Been watching their site for awhile, and true to their word, they've delivered with E85 by Dec 07.

$2.97 a gallon. Guess I'll have to try it in the Avalanche  105 octane, here I come. Should be interesting how much faster than gasoline it burns.

Keep us posted. I have heard you will see a 25% decrease in MPG, so the price would have to be a comparable 25% less in order to break even, economically. But lessening our dependence on foreign oil - priceless. What is the price of gasoline there?

You do understand that ethanol mfg is driving up the price of food, don't you?

The 25% decrease in fuel economy is about right. I drove two identical 2007 Chevy Impalas with 3.5 liter flex fuel engine about 150 miles, 90% highway, 70 MPH. 20 MPG average from both, which is disappointing. And it was calculated accurately, based on filling up the vehicles before the trip and filling them up after. Both were almost new cars with about 3k miles in our Air Force motor pool. They run their vehicles exclusively on E85 and have their own E85 pump on the base.

I figure these same cars would get close to 30 MPG on regular 87 octane gas driven in the same manner.

Making ethanol out of corn is highly inefficient, compared to other raw products like sugar or even cellulose plant material.

Burning ethanol blended with gas is inefficient compared to burning pure ethanol like in Brazil.

Having to truck ethanol instead of pumping in a pipeline because ethanol absorbs water burns countless gallons of diesel fuel.

Wasting money and resources by developing ethanol consumption instead of other technologies because the major food corporations dump millions of dollars into our corrupt politicians pockets only delays a viable fuel alternative.

How is this helping to cut our dependence on foreign oil???????

not to thread jack but it is a small step, hopefully the e-flex (or whatever it is called on the volt) will make it out ......

Sure thing, I can't wait to try it.

In terms of MPG, I think a lot of folks would agree that if you bought a truck today with gas prices as they are, MPG is/was not a concern that affected your purchase. If that were the case, purchasing a hybrid would make more economical sense. I always find it amusing when folks complain about gas mileage yet have a large vehicle/gas guzzler. *shrug*

I bought the AV because it has flex fuel capabilities, not so much to save money on gas, but for the same reason I put performance mods on it....I like to go faster  Since installing the CAI and exhaust, my MPG has gone down considerably due to the proportionate increase of putting my foot to the floor when I get the chance. I'd like to experience my vehicle's full potential short of strapping a flux capacitor to the back  The thought of running 100+ octane in the tank far outweighs any concern for my pocket book at this point. I just think it's gravy that E85 is cheaper, but then a few years back diesel was way cheaper than gas. It could be that E85 may become more expensive than gasoline in the future, but at least the flex fuel capability gives me the option to switch.

Good times :nono:

P.S. Average price of premium gas in Los Angeles is $3.45 per gallon.

Well said. Ethanol is backed by huge marketing spend and any reduction on foreign oil dependence is quickly offset by the highly inefficient refining process using corn which further contributes to green house gas production and inflated food costs. Before people jump to using ethanol, do some research and educate yourselves vs. following commercial advertisements.

The corn for E-85 is not for human use. It's feed corn for livestock and still is. They feed it to the cows after extration and what is left is pure protein, and the cows love it.

No food is being taken away from little kids....Unless you want to feed them that corn. It's not like the corn from Gelsons or Mrs. Gooch's. (High end markets in L.A.)

It's Crap corn!

I've been using E-85 for about 4 tanks now in my 2008 gmc, and brother... it does suck it down.

It does not seem any faster than gas. It makes it harder starting in cold weather so you need to mix gas with it 75% E-85, 25% gas per the owners manual if it's 35deg or less.

It sells for $2.35 per gallon here in north Texas at Kroger market gas stations. With a Kroger card and buy $100.00 (easy for us) of food you can get it here for $2.05 per gallon. That's a plus for me and the spread is enough to make it worth while.

I like it, it smells great out the tail pipe...LOL

SO....As long as I'm doing something to not have to directly use OIL FROM THE MIDDLE EAST MY SELF....then it's good for me! :)

I you had/have a Flex Fuel truck you would not knock it if you were getting it for $2.30 per gallon. It seems most people that rant about how it sucks, don't have the ability to use it! It's just their way of dealing with the fact they can't use it.....

I had a Hybrid and it SUCKED! I sold it within the year....You can have it!

I know we have to do something, but if you watched Boston Legal last week they did a great bit on how much it really costs the enviroment to make 1 battery for a hybrid. It was staggering but true.

So enjoy the E-85...Like I said, I like it. If it makes your ride faster than I guess that's great if thats what you're looking for.....Rock on :nono:

With that...Y'all have a great New Year

Uh, yeah...or no. It is the same corn that is used to feed cattle. Therefore, feedlots must pay more for it since there is more demand for it. Thus, the price of beef goes up. That is where the price of food going up comes from.

But the feedlots still have to buy it from the plants, and at an elevated price. It also costs more money since it has to be trucked first to the ethanol plant and then to the feedlot, also wasting more diesel. The ethanol plants are not going to give it away, not after they paid top dollar to have it first.

Here is some reading about it. After that, it's only fair to come up with you're own idea on what this does for YOU!

Nothing new there. Ethanol from corn is one of the least efficient ways to make fuel. Ethanol made from certain grasses, he!!, even algae (quite interesting, actually, to look into) is more efficient. It takes way too much water (not a renewable resource, just like oil) to make it with corn. And, actually, ethanol from corn does quite a bit for me, since my dad is, in fact, a corn farmer. Hey, price of corn was excellent this year thanks to the ethanol plants.

Posted

Well.....then y'all should be happy if you sell corn. The way the Gov pays farmers to not grow anything really blows my mind.

You should go out and buy a new GMC Z-71 Flex Fuel and support your dad's efforts.......Right?

The whole thing is twisted....I'm going to drink E-100 right now.....LOL :nono:

Be happy.....
