Trailer Hitch Receiver Size

What size is the right size for a receiver for my '09 Sierra, 2" or 2 1/2"? My truck is up my summer house and I've gotta pick up a receiver and a ball tomorrow for it.

I pretty sure its a 2"....thats what mine is

I think he means the size of the tube opening on the hitch. My receiver on my 2500HD is a two inch with an adapter [ came that way from GM]because the opening in hitch is larger. I believe it will take the 2 1/2 receiver minus the adapter. plowking

Mine is a 2 inch on my factory hitch on my 08 Silverado.

Correct,The 1/2-tons all have a 2" receiver.

The GMT900 HD's have a 2 1/2" receiver that you insert the adapter to go to 2".

Mine is 2-1/2 inch. They give you a sleeve if you want to downsize to 2".

Same here.

I have an 8 inch pintle hook on my deuce and half. Is that better? :omg:

Only if you're towing a 105mm Howitzer :)

You don't say if your Sierra is 1500 or a 2500HD/3500HD. As was said in previous posts, here is what comes standard from the factory:

1500 --> 2" receiver

2500HD/3500HD --> 2 1/2" receiver with sleeve

Either way, most hitches will be 2" square. If you get that you should be okay (assuming you are not towing something that requires Class V, which is the 2 1/2" version for trailers over 10,000 pounds ....)

Oh, and not to be an a-hole, but just so everyone knows -- the "standard" towing terminology is:

receiver style hitch --> the part that bolts or is welded to the truck frame (different from a fixed tongue hitch which can't accept inserts)

receiver --> the square tube part of the hitch that you slide inserts into (like a ball mount, drawbar, bike rack)

ball mount --> the actual tube that slides into the receiver on one end and accepts a ball shank on the other end

hitch ball --> the towing ball itself
