Hello all

new to the forum, looking forward to accessing your knowledge on all things GM.

I'm near Ottawa, Ontario, and have a stock '04 yukon xl, 130,000 km.

Earlier this year, I noticed oil dripping from the left side of the front diff around the axle stub. A common problem...but my axle stub will not pop out no matter how hard I motivate it with a slide hammer (apparently GM has a service bulletin for this which requires removal of the front diff). I topped up the housing a few times with gear oil while waiting for some spare time to remove the housing, but let the last top up go to long and ran it dry.

Fast forward to last weekend. Icy parking lot, put the Yukon in 4wd and headed to the road. While still on ice, coasting to a stop, I selected 2wd. As always, light flashed twice, then remained solid, indicating 2wd was engaged. On dry pavement I could tell something wasn't right, and 1/4 mile down the road, 40 mph - BANG

Steering wheel shook violently back and forth a few times, then steadied out. I limped home not sure what happened and parked it. Slight grinding noise from front end. I should mention a brief odour of burning clutch/brake lining just after the bang.

Today I pulled the drain plug and some dark gray sludge oozed out with a minimal amount of tiny metal shavings. Refilled the case with gear oil, test drove and all seems ok...for now. No grinding

I no longer trust my front diff. Any idea what let go???

I'm going to yank the entire front diff one day anyway, but I may just swap out for a decent junkyard unit rather than rebuild. For now, I'm going to top up the gear oil once a month.

Best guesses welcome.

Welcome!

Sounds like a new front diff is in order. Seems that the clip that holds the L/H stub shaft will not release not allowing you to remove the shaft. I had that happen on my old 93 Sonoma. Had to replace the entire front diff. It wasn't very hard to do and I got a used one with a warranty out of a local salvage yard for a good price and it lasted for a long time till I traded it in on my 02 silverado.

Thanks.

It's your second set of wheels that has my interest now. The '65 Imp is my dream car. They're hard to come by here in the great white north, either they're rusted out from 40+ years of salt exposure, or the current owner has watched too much Barrett-Jackson and believes it to be worth its weight in gold.

I'm going to head south someday and scoop one. I've got a 454 sitting in my garage waiting patiently.
