Does Denali 6.2l Require Premium Fuel?

Trying to decide on the 5.3 vs 6.2 :happysad: . I really want to stay away from the 5.3l since you are required to get it with AFM now. Just not a fan of the technology and since I keep my trucks for a long time I don't want the liability. If I compare a base SLT to the base Denali the Denali seems like the better value given you get 6.2L, 4 wheel disc brakes, nicer interior/exterior and 20" wheels. I'm a little concerned about the MPG with the 6.2L but it doesn't seem too terrible. However, IF the 6.2L requires premium fuel then the fuel cost goes up a lot and I'd have to take that into consideration. Can anyone confirm the fuel requirements/recommendations for the 6.2L?

Thanks,

John

Required to drive... no. Required for the stated power/torque/economy numbers? Yes.

As for your fear of AFM, IMHO... it's wasted worry :happysad: So many things in life to be concerned about, but AFM isn't one. The majority of us have had zero issues with AFM and those that have... the issue was there at the get-go due to a bad batch or something and GM is taking care of them. There's no reason to think an AFM lifter will fail any easier or quicker than a non-AFM lifter.

Yes GM recommends premium fuel for the 6.2L. I know there are a number of people that don't run premium in their 6.2 and they run fine, but you will not get the rate performance from it if you do this.

My opinion on the matter is if you are going to spend that kind of money on a truck then why skimp on the fuel. IF you empty the tank out and then fill it up completely you are talking about $6.00 difference per tank.

Not to mention, the 6.2 if also a Flex Fuel engine so you can run corn in it too.

Agree with the other posts. Not REQUIRED but necessary for rated power. Also, if you get a custom tune, you will REALLY be to tell the difference between regular and premium.

I run Premium and E85. Lately I have been running E85 because it is about 70 cents cheaper than premium. Not seeing a huge decrease in milage with it either. After a few more tanks I will re-calculate

Not to mention the lifter issue is NOT specific to AFM engines. Trust me, I should know. :fume:

Oh, and as others have and will say. If you get the 6.2l, which recommends premium... you're required by truck enthusiast law that you must run Premium. So just assume it's required. :happysad:

Yes...Premium.

Assuming you fill up a completely empty tank once a week, you are probably looking at $6/week or $300 a year difference in cost. If you wanted to run 1/2 prem and 1/2 regular you cut that in half. I would get the Denali, then again I have one :happysad:

does the bear shit in the woods?

just buy premo and be done, if you can't afford the extra dime a gallon then you probably can't afford the truck, i hear dodges are pretty cheap now a days :happysad:

Thanks guys! I hear you on the rationalization of cost :happysad: .

I picked up a G8 GT last year and it has AFM and the lifter tick at idle is extremely annoying. Not quite annoying enough yet to take it into the dealer and ask them to tear the top end of the motor apart to put in another set of not-so-great AFM lifters though.

Just throw several ears of corn into the tank. :happysad:

Using premium fuel will most likely increase the mileage by several percent, thus offsetting the higher fuel cost. You will also get better performance.
