8000 Miles Without Oil

Went to a national chain to get my oil changed. Right before I took the wife and kids on vacation. We traveled through everykind of terrain from 7500' elevation to the sea level and through death valley. I did notice slightly less gas milage and a brief knock at start up. I took it last week to get an oil change(at a differant place) after our adventure and was immediately taken into the office and asked to sign a waiver, because the last place I took it to drained the oil and changed the filter, but did not add the NEW OIL. I am seeking an attorney to take care of the national chain (any suggestion) but I am incredibly impressed with GM's motor. I have a 2009 sierra

Maybe the place that says there was no oil in it is actually the place you need to stay away from? Have you checked the level of the oil since you got it back from them? As you have probably come to understand, there is no way in hell you could have gone 8k without oil. Since you saw no leak, are not getting the low oil level light, and the pressure never changed, you can also rule out that you somehow managed to lose all the oil just seconds before you had it changed. I would suggest you check your oil level now and make sure you are not 6 liters overfull (who knows, maybe they did not pull the correct drain plug, if that is even possible?), make sure you have the correct level of trans fluid, pwr steering fluid, brake fluid and whatever else you can think of. Even if you were down as little as 3 liters, that light would have come on.

 

This is the same thing I was thinking........ No way in hell that vehicle had no oil in it.

 

More likely scenario is that one tech dumped the oil and put the plug in then went to lunch. Another tech took over and found no oil in the engine and went to his supervisor and he jumped to conclusions.

Hmmm, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to autos and engines, but my bullshit meter is absolutely pinned to MAX on this one.

 

I had a bit of a hard childhood and had to work, starting at nine. My first job was helping around an Associated gas station (remember the Red Flying Horse?) That would have been 1951 or thereabouts.

 

One hot day, I the garage was full, so I started drained the oil from a big truck and put the plug back in. Then, with my one-hundred pound body, I managed to wrestle the brimming full oil collector from under the truck. On the way, out, some silly shit (prolly me) left the left door open and I stood up, only to split my head wide open.

 

I was patching up my banged-up head when I heard the boss, Gard was his name, start up the truck. It started, ran for maybe five seconds and SEIZED.

 

After a bit of a discussion, Gard was waaay pissed that I had not filled the engine with oil ... four-inch cut across the top of my head and bleeding ... or not.

 

My position, with blood still pouring off my chin, was that whopping a door with my head just plain hurt too much to care even a little bit about the damned truck.

 

Together, we filled the engine with oil and IT RAN.

 

Man, when the engine was seized, it was totally a no-go.

 

Running an engine 8,000 miles with no oil? Sorry, Fred is joshing here ... Slick 50 be damned.

To complete the story of Steve's life, not that anyone cares, I worked my way through high school and college. Never took a penny or borrowed a dime. Married a great lady at age 20 and I worked hard, sending us both through college and we both graduated with BA degrees. Started a business, worked hard and retired at age 49. Karen and I will celebrate our 47th Anniversary next Monday, July 11.

 

My current rig is a 2010 CC/SB 5.3/3,42 Z-71 LTZ in Victory Red. I love that truck!!!!

I heard from Fred today. Seems he's been busy with a lawsuit against his lawn mower mechanic as well.

 

He's mowed his entire lawn this year, and just discovered, there's not any blades on it!

Steve, you are a year older than me. If a truck don't run over me between now and the 10th, I will be 67. I came up the hard way as well.

I just turned 68 on June 18.

 

We're getting older, but we still love our trucks, my friend. Maybe they help us stay kinda young.

Find another place to have your oil changed, as others have said, you could not possibly have driven the vehicle 8 miles (let alone 8k) without oil.

 

My 2001 Z28 (Sara) has a low oil light when the vehicle is 2 qts. low, I am sure (12 years later) there is a backup safety device on these vehicles to let you know you are low on oil.

 

Your engine would sound like a sewing machine, and would seize without oil in the crank case.

      Question for you Grumpy, why is diesel so much more than gasoline? Seems to me that it may be slightly a little less refined than gas and it doesn't have 10% alcohol which presumably lowers the price of gas

      How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.

      Out and about yesterday on a long Saturday drive I passed a lot of Shell stations. My preferred, so I pay attention. Lot's of small town Illinois so not six stations in three blocks like the city.    Everyone of them over a radius of say 100 miles had regular at $4.19 but one which was the one closest to home at $4.15. However Premium pricing varied greatly between 85 cents over regular to $1.50 over. I'm not counting the price of the station with the lowest regular so the reference is the same for the remainder and all within the same brand. However the spread discrepancy holds across all brands.     @txab, any thoughts on that?

      What are your thoughts? The Chevy Blazer relaunch was an epic case of 'lunchbag letdown'. Jeep Wranglers and Ford Broncos stick out like a sore thumb.    The AI photos do not look like a 'retro version', but shrunken Tahoes. Get away from the 'futuristic look'. I've seen two concepts. One had rectangular headlight like a Rivian and the other way too big headlights (similar to a previous non-Wrangler SUV) should include dual round headlights like the early version.   If not this would look OK   At least it has GM styling (albeit the K2XX) A lot of the images floating around look like Bronco IIs or the current Bronco. Looking at the Broncos in my area (central Ontario, it seems to be a mix of 2 doors and 4 doors, 'mall rated' to ones that could go offroad.    I'm sure a AT4 and AT4X RPOs could be outfitted similar to a Rubicon if the braintrust understood the whole offroad scene. Crossing my fingers that if it does see the light that the front air dam/bumper doesn't extend below the center line of the tire...
