Remote Car starter

Does anyone have a remote starter. What brand and what did you think of it. I was going to get one for my wife for Christmas. I am looking into the bulldog from WalMart. We don't have electric locks  or trunk, I just want the starter. That way the car is warm by the time the kids  get to it.

thanks.

i would definitely recommend DEI (circuit city, best buy...etc). however as long as it is warrantied any brand would be okay. if i have any problems i just go to circuit city and they fix it no questions asked..each time...for free  :D

that's a great present-she'll love it!

I love mine.  I bought it last year at Sam's Club (It's a Bulldog) and it took me about half a day to install.  I think it's worth every penny.  Every morning the truck is warm by the time I get out there.  Now if I could just wire the second button to trigger the seat heater.......   :jester:

I have one on my burb. Bad experience tho- I lent it to my young daughter and the box shorted out (internal) and tryed to engage the starter while she was on the highway. Fried the starter when she was quite far from home!! Not a good experience for her and I'm so anal about my truck that she was afraid to tell me.

Like all stuff- some times they break.  Replaced it with one from a local stereo store because they will warranty it for me.

I'm in Canada and it sure is nice to watch my truck melt itself out from under the snow while I'm having breakfast!

I don't know if they all have this but mine has a disable switch under the dash which I use in off seasons. A few times i have put the keys in my pocket after parking and locking the truck and am walking away from the truck when I hear  it start behind me. I know -my pockets are too tight!!

Enjoy yours!!!

Are they worth it?

For sure, Nothing better than getting into a nice warm truck, when its -10, works great in the summer for the AC as well.

The kids and wife will be very greatfull, I got one for my wife a few years ago(Toyota Camry), and its still working with no problems (Knock on wood). She uses it from work, when leaving she just points it out the window about 10 mins before she leaves, and she watches all her co-workers cleaning off there cars as she drives away all warmed up.

the best tip I can give you, is have it installed professionally it'll save you a load of headaces.

i install remote starts all day long at my work, and i believe the best system out there is from design-tech(target. and pepboys). i put a bulldog system in my wifes car and it has no range at all, about 50 feet, my design tech has about a 500 feet range.

i had mine installed last year and it worked great.but this year its kind of act strange at times.like i was a little more than the 500yard distant and it would not maintain and idle,so i went out and started it manually and it wouldnt turn over :jester: i had to wait 5min till the ECM recalibrate itself.so every once in awhile when i use my remote and go to insert the key to take off.the "Security"light comes on so i shut it down and restart it again :D .by the way its "DEI"

Yeah, the range on mine stinks.  I wanted to be able to start the truck out in the parking lot from my desk at work, but no such luck.  I'm three floors up and can see my truck, but I don't think it likes going thru the 5/8" thick glass windows.

I had an Astro Start car starter installed by a local car/truck accessories shop and it is worth every penny!! I also had a timer box installed since the building I work in is too far from the parking lot that I am required to park in. The timer box is fully programmable. I am also able to start my truck with the remote from the top of a ridge where I hunt and it is toasty when I get there at the end of a freezing day!! I live in Vermont and it is cold more than it is hot!!

Those of you who installed them yourselves, did you have to add the Pass-Lock bypass circuitry to enable the remote starting?  The local shop said they have to do that on the newer GM vehicles.  If so, did that come with the remote starter kit (DEI, Bulldog, etc)?

Yup and Nope.  Yes, you need the bypass module and no, it's not included.  It's another $25 or so, ordered directly from Bulldog.
