I don't get my oil tested, ever. I probably should. I think they dropped it for the .1mpg increase you get, anything to meet or beat that EPA standard!

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me.

These days the environment trumps longevity. I see all kinds of hand-held 2-stroke outdoor power equipment that leaves the showroom on the ragged edge of melting down. They set the things up so lean that they'll never last more than a few years unless you run high quality synthetic oil for premix. Dealers are too afraid of the EPA to make minor tweaks, just to get the things to start a little easier, & run better.

I just started doing oil analysis after running Amsoil - wanted to see how everything was after going twice as long as I normally went before a change. Turned out, the oil was good, but my engine wasn't too happy. Since I've gone to 10 weight it is much better.

On the Honda sites, some of the guys can't see the forest for the trees on this issue. They are so convinced Honda is the biggest engine builder in the world that they can't make a choice that isn't for reliability. The issue is the filters to me. Honda says go by their maintenance minder, and it works well for most people. But, it only calls for a oil filter change every two changes. On my car, that will look like around 17k miles, or two years, with my driving habits.

So, there have been flow and filtration tests on their filters. They flow exceptionally well....because when new their filters efficiency is like 50%. It of course goes up over time.

My theory is:

they are like that so they will last 2 years, not that you get two years because they flow like that.

Why design them that way? Cost of ownership. Some of the guys think I'm crazy to suggest it. But to me it's obvious, every manufacturer has happy lowered oil weight, and every motor oil manufacturer has reduced anti water metals, all to get tiny gains that will make the EPA happy. Of course a manufacturer will also cheap out to make their cost of ownership lower.

Me? I'll just stick on a PureOne filter or similar every year when I do the oil change and worry less for $7.

Nice - stealthy. Bet you can't see them standing behind the truck.

Yeah I've seen several manufacturers of OPE recommend the filter change on the second service. I've never done that for the simple reason that, I know manufacturers are in the business of making and selling equipment - car, truck, bus, chainsaw, or lawn tractor. They lose (money) if their stuff lasts "too long", & they also lose if it doesn't last long enough.

We can see from the oil burning 5.3's of years past, and the self-destruction of Ford's 6.0, 6.4, & 6.7 engines, just to note a couple examples off the top of my head, that they're walking a fine line here.

5 weight is too thin, IMO - zero-weight is just plain dumb ... ESPECIALLY in FL!! :noway::noway::noway: I could see using that to prepare for winter ... in Canada ... but not the lower 48! Guess they want you back in for a new truck when the engine wears out at 100k miles .

Don't walk ... RUN from that dealership ...

Free oil changes I just went with it cause it. I figured it was specified. I will do mine from now on

Sunday took most of the wood out of my shed down to the boat, what we cant/won't use went to the burn pile.

Monday night tried to start up my truck, batteries didn't have enough juice for the glow plugs and cranking. Put the battery charger on it and eventually made it to work. Got out of work and the truck was dead dead. Thankfully a coworker with an f150 was out there so he jumped me. Saved me the wait for AAA, still don't know who that guy is or where in the building he works lol.

Tuesday my neighbor brought me to autozone to buy 2 new batteries. $378 for 2, plus paid the core charge to keep the potentially good battery to toss on the boat.

Now I'm just waiting on my new hitch, shank, head, and ball. My coworkers are going to curse me when they get my stuff, I know I do when I handle hitches and related stuff. One packages is 53lbs the other 83lbs. I wonder if those weights are even right, so many weights are way off. I wonder if my delivery driver remembers working with me, maybe he'll hate me less, or could be hate me more.

Say this today, took a few hours to run him down

4500 cut a way with sleeper. Has 60 gallon rear mount tank underneath. 8 leaves on the rear spring pack. One more than C&C but no top overload. 225s 16" wheels.

Indeed! What is it, like a welding truck?

Though I got my license over a month ago, I'm finally now getting out of the woods regarding finances. Should be able to get a skid plate here soon, as well as the grille I want for cheap, hopefully from a forum member.

Need to wash my truck before the snow flies.

Clipped a rabbit a couple weeks back with the right corner of the air dam. Popped a push rivet out and deflected it downward, but no actual damage to the air dam. Loosened the 2 10mm bolts in the immediate vicinity, realigned it, and it's good as new :D
