Driving around VA. Damn I have never seen over 15.5 in 7.5 years. This is what doing 5 over the speed limit 60-65, will yield.

Having driven around VA before, that is great!!! Now, imagine what the speed limit will yield.

Mine usually shows about 22MPG (on most tanks of gas, "Trip A"), speed limit & cruise control, religiously, my overall average (according to the computer, "Trip B") is 19.2. It's relatively flat out here, and most of my driving is highway, home to/from work. I'll drive up to Tehachapi, my MPGs drop to 17-18  , BUT on the way back down, my MPGs will climb to higher than when I left to go up there :freak: .

I didn't get that in VA when I was there in October. I'm pretty sure I can't count that high.

I hit a whopping 64,000 miles on the way home. I'd say still not broken in yet but the problems it's had over the years would say otherwise I think.

And on E85.. Those are good numbers. I will say the millage on my 15 6.2 is pretty stellar. I seem to always get 19.5 - 21 on the expressway doing 75-80.

You have to pay attention a bit to get decent mileage. Limit remote starts/jack rabbit starts/hard braking applications and drive the speed limit with a steady foot on the accelerator and these things will get good mpg (for a 6000lb truck) I ride with a guy at work that is constantly speeding (zooming) right up on the car ahead like he is always in a huge hurry constantly accelerating hard and then almost immediately hitting the brakes. Complains that his truck gets mpg down in the low teens "Come On Man" funny part is he does not even seem to know he does this crazy stuff......

Over the 1st 1000 miles I am averaging 20.7 mpg so far it should get better as it gets broken in.

That's how everyone drives in MA - even the Prius owners.

I get about 14.5 lately. Lots of short trips and towing. With the car trailer and a 4k lb. vehicle onboard, I get 11.5 if I'm lucky. Used to get 16.5 commuting, after the engine broke in. Something is failing, and I haven't quite pinpointed it yet. I believe it's several things. Pistons, rings, and cam bearings are some of it ...

Best I ever got mileage wise in the 10 years I've owned this truck, was out West - was doing 94 mph for hours on I-80 through WY, UT and NV, motorcycle, camping gear, tools, etc., and my wife riding shotgun - got 19 MPG that trip. I attribute that to the ethanol free fuel & the elevation. Probably would've been in the 20's easily if I drove the speed limit.

I think I got 17.6 out of mine a few weeks ago doing 65mph with the A/C on (hard calculated too). Never did a hard calc on any other trucks I've owned, but the best the DIC ever read on my 2011 6.2L was 15.2. They don't do too bad when you actually put forth effort in conserving fuel.

State troopers everywhere you have to do the damn limit they have already been eyeing me since Indiana doesn't have front plates

You do not want to get popped for 20 over in Virginia. Depending on the county you WILL spend a weekend in jail for it. Insanity.

MA is the same way - as soon as the warm weather came this spring, they were out for blood. Haven't seen that many cops out and about in all the decades I've lived here. Guess our tax money is running dry on Beacon Hill ...

It's a thing apparently. I've read the NY State Police is running heavy handed in NYC, which apparently is uncommon. Cumo and DeBlasio are having a nice pissing match. haha

Georgia State Patrol loves to sit in droves on an overpass on I75 a few miles north of the Florida line. They're like ants right there. Up on top of the overpass and parked on the opposite side of traffic on the slopes of the overpass. Pretty funny that my buddy and his dad have been warning each other and me for years about it. Both have been pulled over there. Of course they show their creds and get the "professional courtesy pass." lol turds

CHP does that too, the western most overpass on CA-58, watching the flow of traffic during "rush hours."

Up in the San Joaquin Valley, they would have one clocking on one on-ramp, and several others on the next one down the road. "Hunter/Killers."

    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.
    • 10 Ford and Chevy engines proven to reach 300,000 miles   You may note a common 3K OCI on this list of gas motors. I skipped over the diesels. Dh'O.
    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
