MSP has Crown Vics, Chargers (which look wicked!) and Tahoes. Don't think I've seen any Caprices yet but I'm sure they're coming considering it has done well in their tests and the MSP car evaluation is like the police car buying bible from what I understand.

My 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis with over 175,000 is still running strong with original engine and transmission.

Large car. Excellent ride. Very reliable (for me). Purchased new in family.

This is the last of the rear wheel dirve large cars to be put to rest. Now gone forever.

A casualty of fuel economy standards.

The younger generation will in short time only see these cars at antique and classic car shows.

Isn't that how it goes for every generation? After all the muscle cars of "our" past are in the antique/classic car shows...Mustangs, GTO's, Chargers...etc.

Changing of the times and requirements.

I miss the bumpers that you could push a shopping cart "buggy" out of the way in a parking lot, without vehicle damage, the most.

The long wheelbase Caprice is just as big, if not bigger inside than the Crown Vic. I liked them but they are anything but roomy for their size, they made horrible use of their size. Camrys and Accords have more room, especially in the back.

Back in the day of the former Caprice, our BART cops would fight to see who got the Caprices for the shift, as they all much preferred them over the Crown Vic, especially when it came to pursuit. My guess would be that many a LEO feels the same way.

I have one!

Hopefully they get a lot of the Caprices out there, the sooner they do the sooner I can get one at an auction. :)

Well that probably won't be taking me back to GM cars. My last GM car was a Buick Roadmaster and the new Caprice doesn't look to measure up in my opinion.

Interesting article. The cadet class fights for the last new Crown Vic. It goes to the top guy in the class. All others get stuck with a new GM. I would not say this is a pro GM article at all.

Tradition doesn't make it right. The Crown Vic was slow and worthless as a police car. All it had going for it was that it was durable, which the officer could care less about since they aren't the ones fixing it. The Caprice and Charger are faster, stop better, steer better, safer and in the case of the Caprice, makes better use of space. The other officers who end up in Caprices will get a waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better car. The top cadet got a shitbox.

Is the Caprice even available yet? Have not seen one around Toronto yet. Are they importing the Caprice from Australia, or building it in North America?

Still from Australia. They're out there but rare.

i think slowly but surely the crown vics are becoming extinct. very rare to see police in crown vics in my area. only people with crown vics are the PA staties.

I think cops should get cheap slow used dodge neons lol :) I dont care for trafic cops that hand out tickets all day . The only cops I care about are the ones busting up gangs and drugs and going after people that are dangours. Most cops are a hairline off of being a bad guy . Lots of power and they all protect each other.
