lifter noise has started

21k miles and this week i've started hearing the dreaded lifter tapping or piston slap on cold startup. i've had afm disabled since around 5k miles so i don't think that's the cause.

 

i know piston slap noise was common the the 4th gen fbody cars - i own 3 of them and never had an issue with my cars but i know it was a very common complaint on them.

 

guess i'll start paying attention now. and start watching for oil consumption. i don't mind the noise as i've not really heard of any long term bad effects from it. but i do not want to deal with the dreaded oil consumption issue...

Doubt you'll have the oil consumption issue since you have had the DOD turned of at 5k. The lifter tic you have probably wont go away and will have to be delt with. When my truck started to have the tic I tried different kinds of oil, Dino to full synthetic...still had it so the lifters were replaced with the new updated ones. I also had the new updated valve cover, AFM valve shield installed and finally new pistons and rings because of oil consumption. When the tech pulled the pistons out of my truck they were black!, and the oil rings were stuck, it was using oil for sure. I've got a BBP tune now with the DOD off. Truck runs good....real good!

Nothing wrong with either of those. And even though I consider Wix/Napa filters to be top notch, if it were me I think I'd run by Walmart and pick up an AC delco pf48 and screw on there so the dealer won't try that excuse to duck a problem. By the way did you use the oil life monitor for changes or did you do oil changes at a set mileage? None of these 5.3 problems make any sense to me; I'm just curious if there's something in common between those folks having problems. Hope you get your truck checked and fixed. Good luck.

Lifter tick will increase with RPM and decrease at idle, where as the piston slap is no rythmatic and goes away @ engine operating temperature.

 

My 2001 Z28 (Sara) has piston slap until warm, then I get an intermetant tick (non rythmic) which I believe to be the fuel injectors.

Also, change your oil at set milage. After I had lifters replaced the dealers said to change oil after XX kms not by the oil monitor gauge. they said not to trust it...

Just had my lifters replaced. Got 40 k on it. What bs. This should not be happening with a new truck.
