And looks a lot better while doing it... :) Seriously, it's been rare that anyone driving an Ecoboost has mentioned mpg numbers better than mine for similar conditions.

My main concern w/ the EB is that it's in a F-150. I've test driven one, and looked at a few, and they just don't have the solid feel of my Sierra. Looks are subjective, but the doors, tailgate, and sheetmetal on the F150 feel lighter to me. The handles, gear selector, etc. are also less "weighty" on the Ford (to me), and that turn signal is outright annoying. None of the difference in feel is so much that I wouldn't buy one, but it would be hard to give up my truck plus a good chunk of $$, regardless of the hp/torque numbers.

Most people that buy an EB do it for the tow capacity and power and well opt for the 3.55 or 3.73 ratio and not the gas saving 3.15

Their PDF file has some impressive numbers for unloaded mpg on their trip. The towing mpg isn't great, but probably no worse than any other gas motor pulling 9000 lbs over an 11,000 ft pass at those speeds. I wouldn't want to pull that trailer over that pass behind my 5.3. Now, if I had a supercharger... that would be a different story.

LOL ever towed 10k with a half ton?? Idc what anybody says, a half ton is a half ton. After 7-8k they just don't feel at home...nuff said

I have. It wasn't pleasant. I have with an 01 F-150 KR super crew and my GMC. My truck handled it better even with having a smaller engine. Both were 3 hour tows. I still do with my GMC but only to move the trailer on the 2.5 acre property or to go get it washed to prep for the trip. We have a Dodge 2500 HD 4 wheel drive Gasser for that. I had to tow it with mine because it literally blew up the transfer case.

I agree that 10k lbs is way too much for a 1500 or F150. Somewhere in the neighborhood of ~8k lbs is about the upper range, due to the amount of tongue weight that you need... and even then, you *must* have a weight distributing hitch and trailer brakes, or you'll be bouncing off the bump stops, and getting pushed off the road. That said, today's "half tons" are a lot more capable than 20 yrs ago. The terms "half ton", "3/4 ton, etc. don't really apply any more. Most GM 1500's have a rated payload of ~3/4 ton, and a 2500HD is north of 1 ton.

Exactly, especially if it isn't a 5th wheel...towing over 8k with a half ton Is a joke. It's amazing that they are even allowed to rate them like that, it can be down right scary.

My ol man had an 09 f-150, he swore up and down it towed it just fine. but never took the trailer over 100 miles before. always the same flat road too. he towed that 9000lbs travel trailer across Canada one time. After the trip was thru the tranny shifted really weird and one rear wheel bearing was whining. Half tons just aren't built for that kind of weight, even if they did it just doesn't few safe towing that much with them. he sold the truck couple months later, now drives a 12' PSD f-350 LOL...now he brags about how it can tow heheh...til he sat in mine hooked up to a trailer. Now he don't say jack $hl# although I do give that new ford props for being so good on fuel tho. Much better than mine on fuel...unloaded. Loaded mine is still better.

My truck is rated to tow 9,400 lbs. I wouldn't be caught dead towing that. My loaded sled trailer and travel trailer both run right around 4500-5000 lbs rolling down the road. I haven't pulled the TT yet (just bought it) but considering that the truck pulls the sled trailer with next to 0 fuss and I have almost $1000 in weight distribution/sway control to pull the TT, I'm sure it won't be much of an issue to drag around. Much more than that might exceed my comfort level but that also depends on how far I'd be pulling it, through what type of terrain, etc. Still, 9,400 lbs behind my truck isn't going to happen as long as I own it, that I guarantee.

The tow rating thing brings up an interesting point. Having too much power on tap can lead folks to tow heavier loads, or go faster, than they should. I've read it many times already, where folks w/ bigger motors (or forced induction) are towing 8000 lbs @ 70 to 75 mph, because it's "effortless". Trailer tires are only rated to 65 mph to begin with, and going fast with a heavy load can get crazy really quick when an emergency hits (blown tire, etc). Just because it "seems" to tow easily, doesn't mean it's smart.

That's exactly why people should be buying one but lots got sucked in by the great mpg advertising.

Ya know if it sounds too good to be true it probably isn't.

Towing ability and power Ford done good.....mpg is just average.

Anybody comparing the mpg of a 5.3L to mpg of an Ecoboost without factoring in power and ability just makes me laugh.

Compare it to the big V8s of all manufactures mpg and it's all of a sudden a bit better story....cause it performs as good or better than the Ford 6.2....Chev 6.2....Dodge....Toyota

Then get back to me.

My VMax sucks more gas unloaded, about the same towing, and doesn't do as good a job or is as much fun to drive, even after $1000+ of mods.
