More safety stuff, insulation, electronics. It all adds up.

Makes sense. I like my "barebones" truck

100 in a truck is plenty fast for me.

I rarely do more than 85 in mine, after 110 it feels unstable

Sucks they limit the top speed to 99 MPH in the Silverado...

That speed limiter is usually set due to the tire speed rating. That's a CYA move and they all do it.

Did not know that was the reasoning behind that...

That or the driveshaft. The newer V6 Mustangs cut off at 112 due to that and there is a great video of a guy who blew apart his DS among other parts after having the limiter removed with a tune.

You never want to mess around with the chance of a rotational piece letting go. As much as we like to accuse the auto companies at setting these limits arbitrarily to prevent us from having fun, we have to face the fact that these vehicles were definitely not designed to cruise down the autobahn at 200 kph.

When you start designing components for heavy duty applications (ie, towing, carrying loads) while trying to minimize weight gains and maximizing drivetrain efficiency, limits have to be set. Transmission components, driveshafts, transfer cases, CV-joints, etc, all have to let go at some point or another. And while we worry about the tires, I'd be keeping an eye on chinese made brake rotors or wheels as well. I've seen both rotors and wheels crack and let go at the track when I used to road race and it ain't pretty. Heck, I've seen 4L60/65/80E's let go while drag racing and it sure as hell isn't funny when transmission debris comes through the tunnel and into the cab of the vehicle.

The other thing we have to keep in mind is that designing these rotational components to be strong either drives up the price and drives up their size and inertial mass (beyond just adding to the curb weight), resulting in higher drivetrain losses, slower performance and lower vehicle efficiency.

So while we want to drive these trucks hard, if you really want to go fast for sustained lengths of times, get a Corvette or Camaro.

Saw some pictures on one of the RV forums of a fairly new (around 05 at the time) Duramax letting go of its driveshaft at the front end. Put a hole in the floorboard, and nearly scared the fella to death. IIRC, he wasn't towing and wasn't driving fast. Something was wrong and it just let go.

I can't imagine what would happen if he had been driving fast.

Hey I'm coming from a Trailblazer SS that I can hit 140 in with no problem. LOL this will be the first vehicle I've ever owned that I couldn't hit 100 in lol

The 2014 sierra I have had no problem getting up to 110, I don't think you should be driving it that fast, but I can attest it doesn't shutoff @ 99

I wasnt saying it to be a buzzkill, it's just fact. I drove it up to that speed for a quick minute just to see what it was like and it's not confidence inspiring, to say the least. I've owned some pretty fast vehicles in my life including the fully bolted g8 I traded in on the truck and they felt stable and sure footed at triple digit speed, trucks are simply not designed for that, it's dangerous to drive them that fast, unless they have been heavily modified in the suspension and braking and downforce departments.

I've had motorcycles that could go from 0-100-0 quicker than a truck could get itself up to 100 period. Now the newer ones including the 2014 gmc is miles ahead of older trucks, but you can't fight physics.

GM raised the limiter to 135 on the new trucks.

Now that I have a over 500 miles on the truck I tested the acceleration on it today leaving town. I have no doubt in my mind that it's in the very low 6 second range but I'm also in a single cab short box with the 5.3. Once I get the tuner in there and a e47 mix in the tank, I have no doubts this truck will be in the mid 5's. Thanks to the direct injection, we will now be able to run quite a bit of timing on pump gas so I'm excited for cams that will come out in the future. I'm kind of waiting for someone to say the 6.2 vette cam can be used or something.

    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
