Clearcoated alloy wheel corrosion issues

It seems that GM has not improved the finish quality on their polished and clear coated alloy wheels. I recently saw a brand new 2012 Sierra HD 2500 truck sitting on a dealer's lot with all 4 alloy wheels visibly pitting.

The external wheel weights is one cause. I wish they would learn and do it like other vehicles (my camaro and van have em). Next truck I will have them removed immediately and replaced with stick on weights.

These wheels were pitting mostly around the spoke edges, not on the outer rim where the wheel weights are.

By the center cap? That's another area either from rubbing or not blowing water out of that area

My '07 pitted on the leading edge of each spoke. The wheels were re-finished under the bumper to bumper warranty. I hope my '12 wheels hold up better.

It really ticks me.off having wheel weights outside. Getting mine switched in the morning.

Has anyone tried soda blasting the wheels to remove the clearcoat and wheel weight discoloration and not damage the wheel finish and then re-clearcoat the wheels?

That is what a local rim shop suggested for my truck. $135 a wheel.

"pitting" on any aluminum wheel indicates "inner granular corrosion".

 

GM has a long standing history of poor quality rims.
