Cooper Tires now Indian Owned

I've seen a couple different articles on this and it looks like they are doing this for a bigger global footprint. Basically taking the 11th and 16th largest tire companies worldwide and making it a the 6th largest. And they are stating that all U.S. management, workers and plants will remain operating as is.

We have a huge Bridgestone tire plant in Aiken, SC, just expanded it too. Also, Yokohama Tire is building a HUGE plant in West Point, MS! It will employ 2,000 people when it is done, plus, all the construction, etc. jobs building the plant. I'm into buying American made, so what I do is look carefully for Made in USA on things I buy.

They will more than likely keep the factories in the US open. A customer of mine has ties to one of the VP's of Apollo in India. (customer is Indian) He studied in the same school over there. From what he told me, they merged to gain a bigger footprint in the market. They want people to associate Apollo with Cooper, which would potentially bring more sales for both lines. Apollo is one of the leading passenger / light truck lines in the middle east.

 

As someone mentioned in this thread, its really no different than BFGoodrich. They are owned by Michelin. Michelin is a French owned company. I know France and India are worlds apart but as long as they don't mess with the rubber compounds used to build the tires, they quality will remain the same. I guess we will have to wait and see there.

while South Carolina only has 1 Bridgestone/Firestone plant, Tennessee has 2 Brigestone/Firestone Plants! (unfortunately, they only make Large Truck and Bus Tires) and out of the 8 Tire Distrubution centers sprinkled throughout the nation, there's one Located in Lebanon, Tennessee.

good news for AMERICAN Workers..... their so called "deal" with the union would have slashed employee wages approx. 40% and severely cut benefits to keep the american plants open. Otherwise the name would be stamped on Indian and Chinese made tires... The American Corporate officers were also going to get boned on this deal so that's probably why they cancelled it.

not only that, Hankook Tires is wanting to Open a Plant in Clarksville, Tennessee (and after doing a bit of digging, I found out that Hankook was an OE SUPPLIER for the Chevy Aveo and its Siblings!)

Thanks for the heads up. I will always go American made and no one can convince me otherwise. Yes, it can be more expensive because of those pesky regulations (you can thank voting certain people in office for that), but I can trust the quality of American builders. Plus you can more so trust the warranty and liability (and them actually giving a care) in the rare event that something goes wrong. It' not politically correct but I am always frank about going American made.

Hankook was OE on many F-150s when I was working at the dealership in the mid 2000's

The sale of Cooper to Apollo is off, they ran into issues with some chinese partnership and Union problems in the US that soured the purchase in the eye of the buyer. Mixed stories on how it fell out(Apollo), but consensus seems to be that the buyer stretched it out long enough to allow the deal to expire and get them off the hook
