My 98 F-150 just won't do much @ 10,000ft and I need to tow 7,000 lbs from Denver over the Continental Divide.

 

I like my idea better.

With my partner's 5.9l Durango we learned the hard lesson of hp loss per 1,000 additional feet elevation from baseline/sea level. The front door is 9180 and her family is on the other side of the Continental Divide. A diesel isn't in consideration any more because I have asthma and the exhaust is very bad news - and the truck won't be run even 3-4 times a month so there are concerns about the fuel, fuel system, and the expense for any repairs compared to conventional gasoline engines.

 

The first time I pulled 5,500 pounds up from 5070ft to our front door, the Durango barely managed 20mph on the long climb with mileage in the low single digits through the worst inclines. It was spec'd out by us when new for max tow rating and reality was an eye-opener. I chose an Anderson equalizing hitch for stability and ease of hooking up. That, at least, was the best possible choice - I can't recommend them enough!

 

The 8.1l cam be supercharged later to equalize the O2 needs and return it to OEW sea level specs - and the same would be the longer-term plan for the Durango.
