So....used E85 yet?

I don't see why you would, unless you convert your truck to Flex by adding the sensor, like I had done.

I bought all the OEM parts myself and had Carl (seller above for the kits) install them in my truck. He built the kit based of what he saw with my truck and built it to make it easier to install and less parts to buy.

I'm a little confused on the whole E85 thing. Can I run E85 in a premium tune? The tune said nothing under 91....but from a bit of reading E85 is actually more in the region of 100+ octane rating. Is the name just a bit misleading in E85? Or am I just completely confused?

E85 is higher octane that Premium, I don't know exact numbers, but I recall high 90s to low 100s.

 

If your truck was Flex Fuel to start, I would think you can run it with your tune....but i don't know that for sure. I would check with your tuner to see if he updated those tables with his tune.

I only use E85. $1.30 where I live but don't drive the truck everyday, it's just a toy. I have noticed a difference in power and the computer is saying avg 16.1 mpg. Don't know how accurate those are though.

E85 is an abbreviation for an ethanol fuel blend of 85% denatured ethanol fuel and 15% gasoline or other hydrocarbon by volume. Ethanol’s true octane value range, is about 94-96 (R+M)/2

Not apples to apples. E85 does have very high knock resistance so you can crank up the timing like with 93 oct, but it will need to be a separate tune as E85 requires much more fuel due to it's reduced energy density.

 

The advantage to a truck with a sensor is that the computer will detect the amount of alcohol in the fuel and switch tables automagically. Otherwise, you will need to run a specific tune for a specific fuel.

Thanks for the info guys. I contacted hypertech and they said I could use E85 in the premium tune but if I hear any knocking I shouldn't use it anymore. Seems like a bit of a risk to try. Would the knocking be very noticeable? There are plenty of E85 stations around San Diego so I would love to use it. Plus there is a new station opening on Thursday and they're having special pricing for the first day of 85 cents. Seems like a good time to test it out. Does my tank need to be on E?

You don't use E85 with a gas tune. It's a separate tune in the truck's computer.

Ya it is, I verified the number in the glove box and it has the yellow cap on it. I have a 2014 Silverado LTZ, not sure if it's standard in the 14 but mine has it.

 

As for the tune, I contacted hyperttech and he noted that I could use the "Premium tune" setting with E85...He also noted the following...

 

"You can run any octane 93 or less on our premium setting even the E85. Some have a ping on our premium setting using E85 and if that occurs use the regular setting."

 

"Very few have the ping and the ping can only cause damage over time if you hear the ping under hard acceleration. A light ping which most call engine rattle that sounds like BB’s bouncing around inside the engine is not a major concern at light throttle acceleration; if you do not hear the ping there is no concern."

That email doesn't give me the warm and fuzzy. If you want to try e85, I'd first suggest putting your stock tune back on and maybe running e85 on that and see how it goes.

 

Pinging, partial throttle or WOT, no good in my opinion.

Because I run premium gas or e85, I compare those two values to make sure there is at least a 25% gap.

 

E85 is 1.29 right now and 91 Premium is 1.89.

 

I'd run e85 full time probably, but I wanted to give my truck a few tanks of 91 to see how it drives with the tune.

 

I'll go back to e85 after 5 or 6 tanks of 91.

Makes all kinds of sense if you're setup for it. e85 is about $1.00 cheaper a gallon than premium and is higher octane.

Isn't the E85 a lower grade than premium?

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver. 
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....  
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps. 
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.  
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
